Re: Tin Whistle!

I've always thought a good generation (you might have to try a hundred or so befor yo find one) is as good a whistle you'll ever get.

Re: Tin Whistle!

I do agree with llig here but they are hard to come by. John Sindt's whistle have been held in VERY high regard and are within your budget. I've only played one once and thought it was nice but can't comment enough on it I'm afraid. Tony Dixon nickel whistles are good too. Lovely tone but very quiet. My personal favourite is the original Oak whistles but I don't know if they make them any more. As for Kerry whistles, the tone never did anything for me. Horses for courses though.

Re: Tin Whistle!

PaddyCmusic beat my post; I have an Oak and a Feadog, and the Oak is a terrific whistle. Here is the link from the Whistle Shop:

Re: Tin Whistle!

Look up some guides on tweaking tin whistles online before you buy a new whistle. I had decided to buy a new one a few weeks ago but after sticking some lumps of clay in certain spots in the mouthpiece of one of my old whistles, I got it to sound pretty nice and I changed my mind.

Re: Tin Whistle!

I don't care what you do to a Generation, it'll never be comparable to a Sindt. Go for a nice Sindt D. John is a great guy and his whistles are very reasonably priced.

Re: Tin Whistle!

Second michael's post. Persevere through a load - you'll find a good one.
Also the Walton's D in black aluminium is nice, too (dead cheap).
Never pay more than £3/E5 for a whistle!

Re: Tin Whistle!

One of the best whistles I have ever played is a Waltons Mellow D "tweaked" by Erik Torp-Olsen at vargaswhistles.com.
He charges $45 for them and they are worth every cent. Fantastic whistles.

Re: Tin Whistle!

It's time to graduate to the flute or fiddle. You might be
able to start out on fiddle for E100

Re: Tin Whistle!

And I don't recommend that. If you decide to take up another instrument buy a good one. It can be very discouraging to buy a cheap instrument that will not allow you to improve due to its bad quality. I've seen it happen a good few times (to myself included.)

Re: Tin Whistle!

that's true for every other instrument except the fiddle and
tin whistle. You can play even a bad fiddle in tune with good
rhythm and it responds well enough for a beginner.
They used to make them out of cigar boxes and tin cans.
On every other kind of instrument what PaddyC
said is very true.
