Ceili House

Ceili House

For the first time in a few years I happened to hear Ceili House on RTE 1 last night. For those who may not be familiar with Ceili House, it’s an hour-long programme of Traditional Music broadcast on a Saturday night from Irish National Radio. (I may add that it is one of the very few programmes of ITM that is broadcast by RTE) What it is in fact, is a Talk Show with a few traditional tunes by various local artists thrown in to keep people who are interested in ITM happy. Over the past twenty or so years I actually played on it twice and the format is virtually unchanged. . Long interviews with non musicians who have some standing in the community, and sometimes with musicians who never seem to know the name of the tune they are about to play. “ I’ll try this reel I learnt from a man who lived up near Ballysomewhere or other. There then follows a short bio of the gentleman in question, the great player he was etc etc. The reel which is played turns out to be ‘The Bird in the Bush’ or something just as popular. Why doesn’t the compere Kieran Hanrahan, a Banjo Player of Stockton’s Wing and The Templehouse Ceili Band fame, not say to the man “Hang about mate, that tune is called The Bird in the Bush’ Then we have a ‘Come all ye’ type song which goes on for at least ten minutes, the programme then ending with a selection of tunes from the assembled musicians which will probably be faded out for the News. Incidentally if you are a musician there is a big chance that you will be doing a Saturday Night gig somewhere so you wont hear the programme anyway. Unless you have it recorded you’ve had it because for some peculiar reason the programme is never repeated.
Thank God I got that off my chest…I feel much better now !!!!!!

Re: Ceili House and others

You certainly can listen to it on demand, and they have 4 years archives available.
I have been in the audience on various occasions but never actually played on it, although I have played in session with Kieran - really nice bloke.

For those who like a daily dose of ITM on demand (in your own time, lads), can I also recommend
Clare FM (5 nights a week - especially Wednesday session) http://www.clarefm.ie/newsCNU/tradarchive.asp (available for week, no playlist)
The Late Session - Sundays http://www.rte.ie/radio1/thelatesession/ (playlist archive)
Grace Notes - Sat/Sun http://www.rte.ie/lyricfm/trad/ (playlist archive)
Culan - Sunday http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/ulster/aod.shtml?ulster/culan (available for week)

and if you haven't had enough
The Bloom Of Youth (Summer - 3 years archives) http://www.rte.ie/radio1/thebloomofyouth/
Celtic Shores (archive)http://kohm.publicbroadcasting.net/csaudioarchive1.html

Re: Ceili House

I think it's a good show. It highlights a lot of what's happening in music today. Lots of newcoming musicians appear and lesser known bands which deserve the recognition they get on the programme. The whole 'air' of the programme is very audience-friendly so I enjoy listening to it anyway. Yeah, the tune names are always a problem but a very small one. I'll continue to happily listen. It's one of those shows which has proved popular with the I.T.M community over the years and one, which from my experience, has occasionally become part of a conversation. :)

Re: Ceili House

I am a big fan of the Ceili House program and its outreach to the Irish Traditional Community and have even enjoyed being at three live tapings in North America at CCE Convention Weekends in Parsippany (1999), Toronto (2001) and Boston (2003) and a couple in Ireland (Ennis and Tulla). I think Kieran Hanrahan and Peter Browne do an extraordinary job of producing the program and add the human touch to what can sometimes be a very sterile broadcasting approach. They make it look easy and fun when it can be quite chaotic behind the scenes. I believe it is one of the more popular RTE programs on the internet as well as people listen all over the world and I know that I appreciate the archiving element as well.

Re: Ceili House

In listing programmes of traditional music on RTÉ Radio 1 -besides the excellent ones already given, please also mention The Rolling Wave at 2100 local time on Wednesdays and also archived on the RTÉ website.

Re: Ceili House

I'm a big fan of Ceili house too.

This show is totally unique. I wasn't a particular fan of Irish trad music until I started listening to the Ceili House archives. It was a real education to find out how broad the ITM spectrum can be. The show is a bit formulaic, but come on... it's only one hour of great culture, crack and music a week, and it's free.

I've learned some really great tunes from listening to Ceili house, and I'm not that bothered about the tune names being right, wrong or not known. Some of the tunes broadcast on Ceili house might never have been heard outside of their home counties if it wasn't for the show's production team.

KH is a great presenter. His gentle sense of humour and interest in ordinary, everday, Irish life is really refreshing. I wish we had something like this in the UK.

Looks like you're in the minority on this one Free Reed.
