Fiddle lessons in Ireland

Fiddle lessons in Ireland

Hello everyone, I have a friend who is considering spending some months in Ireland and is wondering if there are any prominent fiddlers who are presently teaching. It doesn't matter where in the country. Thanks a million. Buck.

Re: Fiddle lessons in Ireland

There are a couple here in Co. Galway that I can think of:

Paul Bradley (Moycullen) - http://www.paulbradleyviolins.ie/

Brendan Larrissey (Kinvara) - http://www.kamcollective.com/listitem.asp?itemid=273

There's probably a few others, but those two spring to mind.

All the best

Mike

Buck,It doesn`t matter how `prominent` a player they are, if they can`t teach! The best fiddle teachers I have known were not well known session or band players.

I'd agree with cos's comment. However both Paul and Brendan are pretty well known as teachers as well as being great players, though not being a fiddler I can't speak from first-hand experience.

Teresa Burke in Co Tipperary is a very good teacher and will get you to some good sessions, too. It's a whole package deal. Go to www.fiddlersretreat.com for more info. I had a great time on the 3 day package. She's in Loughmore.

I agree absolutely, with you Cos. The situation with my friend is that he is already an advanced player. He wants to hammer out the finer points of the art. I think he would feel more comfortable with someone he has heard of, since he's travelling across the atlantic to do it.

Re: Fiddle lessons in Ireland

You may wish to be aware of the following. James Kelly, brilliant fiddle player living in the States, offers the following:

A Note from James Kelly

I am now offering Irish music students the opportunity to take lessons from me via the Internet. These are real time lessons that allow us to exchange musical information and ideas via the web. The beauty of these lessons is the fact that we can see and hear each other, in person, and the feedback is instantaneous. The technical set up is straight forward, and the audio and video feed via the Internet is very good.

I am offering these lessons primarily to fiddlers; however, on occasion, non fiddlers have requested some general musical feedback on their playing, and I’ve always been happy to accommodate their requests for lessons.

If you would like more information please write to me at jameskellymusic@yahoo.com and I will send you an online lessons overview, plus all the details pertaining to taking online Web Cam lessons with me via the Internet.

Thank you.
James Kelly
