Hi, I've got an old Generation brass whistle with a lead mouthpiece that I bought a few years ago without realising what it was. It's got a lovely sound, and I was advised to varnish the fipple to prevent me getting poisoned. Does anyone else have one, and if so, how do you deal with it safely? I haven't played it for a few years, but I'd love to again.
I have a bunch of old whistles. The lead won't kill you any time soon (I used to live in a late 19th century house that has lead pipe plumbing). Nail varnish over the part you put in your mouth will go a long way a cut to size piece of sticky tape goes a long way too.
I play an overton and in the morning I sometimes have a mettalic tast...is this the metal from the whistle causing this...wonder if the wife`s red nailvarnish on the end would help
Thanks everyone, I feel comforted now, I can take my old friend out to the sessions again! By the way, I was really lucky to get mine, a musical friend saw it at a market stall one day and it was still there the next week! It was quite a few years ago tho'!

Re: old tin whistle
Yes, I love them too. I also have some old 'tin' whistles that probably also have some lead content in the metal and definitely in the solder...

Well, whatever turns you on, Dave. I suppose you could try it on the whistle as well ...

Does anyone know where I can get a Generation with a lead mouthpiece? I looked on eBay, but couldn't find one.
