Right off, what hit me (as always with Mr. Canny) is the beautiful sense of phrasing he has. Then the wildness that creeps in...a wailing, lonesome quality I don't hear in many more recent players.
And fair play to Frankie Gavin--for all the guff he takes about having an ego, here he gives Paddy Canny every deference, letting his fiddle shine in the fore. It's a joy to hear these two together, simply "chancing" a couple of tunes.
Thanks Will, the goose bumps are there and the smile, even if you can't see them... I suspect you feel them when you listen to this.
PLEASE ~ all ~ read the notes, as these were well thought out and heartfelt, the sort of 'content' that adds to the value of U-Tube, as it does in honouring the fiddler here, Paddy Canny...

Paddy is notoriously shy, and even more humble. A true gentleman, he would reluctantly step into the limelight, but never muscled his way there. He didn't have to, what with passion, sincerity, and fiddle chops speaking for him. ~ Like his father before him, Paddy was a farmer by trade. ~ He continues to play music, at the age of 83.
If your are every close to Paddy when he is playing you will notice the huge size of his hands and fingers. It is amazing how he can play so well. He keeps his fingers very close to the strings which is so different to most modern players who use their fingers like little hammers hitting the strings . He has a lovely swing & rythm to his playing , lovely east Clare style. Looking forward already to Feakle and Tulla festivals .
paddy canny is my favorite irish fiddler. a few years ago i got to see him close a fiddle-recital night at clancy week. after being helped to the stage and his seat, he then proceeded to mesmerize, electrify and induce near-frenzy in, the audience, which would not let him leave and stayed on their feet begging for encores. it wasn't sentiment, it was the spell of his incredible playing....
