I'll be heading out to Michigan for the Midwest Fleadh in May, staying with my friends David and Tina Bowen.
I've not been to a fleadh before. While I wasn't planning to compete, I was curious if there will be all kinds of sessions going on day and night. If anyone else on C&F is planning on attending, perhaps we could arrange a group meet-up during the event.
I'll be in Michigan May 6-13 (Tuesday before to the Tuesday after the fleadh), looking for any sessions around the Ann Arbor and/or Detroit areas before and after the fleadh. I'm bringing the pipes and concertina.
Lots going on here in Michigan. Sessions of all types. See our Site at www.SessioNite.com where you will find a calendar with sessions listed. It appears there are at least seven opportunities to play other than what may take place at the Fleadh.
There is a Midwest Fleadh Syllabus under Documents on SessioNite in case you don't have one.
I'm curious, as far as the competitions, in the 18+ group, how many people typically compete in the whistle and Uilleann pipes? My friends here are encouraging me to compete, but I have no idea what to expect.
I asked the wonderful lady who would best be able to answer your question, Michael, and this is what I got in reply:
"That's a hard question to answer because the number changes every year. I would say that there are more whistle competitors than pipes but, until we start getting entries, I can't give you a solid number. I know this doesn't help much but it's the best I can do."
My recomendation is that you compete. I have been to your site and have listened to sound recordings. Go For It!!!! Expect nothing but fun.

Re: Sessions at the Midwest Fleadh?
One last thing, The fleadh website says:
"One of the best aspects of any fleadh is the inpromptu sessions that go on all night in the hotel lobby and hallways".

The fleadh will be less than half a mile from my work and only twenty minutes from home. Hope to see you there, Michael.

Re: Sessions at the Midwest Fleadh?
Plenty of people go to the Fleadh just for the sessions and a chance to see old friends.
Even most of our kids who compete find the sessions the best part.
See you the4e

I'll be there just for the sessions. They're normally pretty good, and go laaate into the night.
