I am in Edinburgh from 17th to 19th April and would like to play at a session on Thursday and/or Friday ... Can anyone help please? If possible, it should be predominantly scottish, not irish ....
The Antiquary on Thursday has a very Scottish repertoire (unless I am leading the set -- sorry ).
Your Friday sessions are the Tass and Sandy Bells. Bells will be mostly Irish. I've not been to the Tass Friday sesh but I know who generally leads that session and they play more Scottish than Irish tunes.
The Malt Shovel no longer has sessions, as far as I know.
Sorry to hijack the thread but it sort of relates - what is the name of the pub in Edinburgh that I played some great sessions in - the pub is accross the road on the corner from The World's End pub?
Ta!
It means I have a vague idea of the location of the World's End pub but I'm not sure. If it's the pub on the corner of the Royal Mile and the street that eventually becomes the Dalkeith Rd, then the session pub is indeed the Tass. But it may be a different pub on the aforesaid corner.
corner of Royal Mile and St Marys St, and the Tass is indeed across the road, although St Marys St is Jeffrey St over there
When I saw the session, they were up in the raised bit by the front window with railings round, which meant it would have been hard to join in when that bit is full
as you cross the street from the World's End to the Tass, or indeed from the Tass to the World's End, look down and you will see two brass markers in the road showing the width of the gate that was there in the wall when the World of the Auld Toon inhabitants did indeed End there.
Next to the WE in St Marys St is the Waverley Bar the "legendary folk venue" where The Corries started off. Perhaps some of our, erm, more experienced Session.org members can tell you a story about that.
These days it's a fine place for a quiet drink in its pleasantly gloomy interior
Ha ha.

Lesser-spotted bodhran - and we think we've progressed since then!

Re: Edinburgh SCOTTISH Session wanted Thursday, Friday
I'm not sure if The Malt Shovel is still happening. It was supposed to have stopped.
I think Sandy Bells is more Irish on a Thursday but there were good reports of Scottish music there last Friday. Worth a visit anyway.
You could also try The Antiquary on a Thursday where you'll hear quite a lot of Scottish stuff.

You'll get a mixture in the Tass on Friday but quite a lot of Scottish stuff.

UKCittern...
That would be the Tass, if The World's End is where I think it is.
