The survival of Cluain Tarbh

The survival of Cluain Tarbh

One of the most remarkable things about the oft blogged about dissolution of the Clontarf branch of Comhaltas is how the membership of the branch has managed to maintain such an extraordinary unity and to keep on doing its thing despite all the hardships it has suffered recently.
Perhaps the reason is that the (dissolved) branch is a community in the true sense of the word. It's the sum total of its members and their activities. It’s about friendships forged by spending Easter together each year in Inis Oirr. By spending the summer together knee deep in mud in caravan sites in Milltown Malbay, Drumshanbo, Tubbercurry and God knows wherever else the music takes us.
More than that it’s about friendships forged with the fellow travellers met along the way. One of the really nice things about the (dissolved) branch is that its doors are open to all. You can join its adult classes and sessions regardless of who you are. You can be a member of any branch of Comhaltas or none. Nobody asks! Ditto its young persons’ session.

Dissolve that Labhras!

The other heartening thing was how the wider traditional music community has rallied around the branch in its time of need. Once the idea of a fund raising concert was mooted our problem became how we would manage to fit everyone in.
So thank you for a great night

Fair dues to ye - if we can only judge the situation by what people do rather than what they spout on about - then yous win hands down.

Great concert. Lovely atmosphere, lighthearted despite the sadness of the situation, with no rancour displayed towards certain individuals, just a deep sense of sadness that after all the years of fundraising the building stood empty. Sad indeed.

Lovely to be at an event in Dublin where everyone knew each other and enjoyed the wonderful music and company.

Re: The survival of Cluain Tarbh

Great Concert indeed and one of the adverts for it was eyecatching in that included so many of the people that an Rogaire Dubh sought to badmouth. Raises a couple of questions
1)Why when trying to prove their pedigree did they have to use that picture? and
2) Did they get the permission?

ncarta, exactly what do you mean?

Re: The survival of Cluain Tarbh

Really, ncarta, did I badmouth anyone. Remind me, who?
If I "badmouthed" anything it was a process, a procedure, the manner in which things were done. That is not the same as badmouthing an individual!

Re: The survival of Cluain Tarbh

An Rogaire, your blog of march 21st was not particularily complimentary of those people who reconstituted a branch in Clontarf after the unit they had worked for for so long had been dissolved through no fault of theirs. The criticisms of who and how, have been admirably dealt with however it is worth bearing in mind that one of the advertisements for last Fridays Concert contained a picture from over thirty years ago and in that picture were a good few of those you suggested would not be known to members of the Dissolved Branch. They would you know, they have been around for years, some since it's inception, their contribution both to CCE and their branch has been exemplary and the esteem Clontarf was held in, was mainly down to their contribution. Ironically had the effort involved in staging Fridays Gig been repeated a little more often in the past and had similar profits been raised there would have been a credit rating and we would not have been dissolved. It was also nice to note that your committee members paid for some of their tickets, they seemed positively incapable of contributing to Clasac.but methinks that was before your time.
