The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

I was going through my old records of Folk/ITM the other day and I came across a track on one of my LPs called Flanagan's Reels. The LP was recorded live in a folk club in Bristol in 1967. I recognized the two reels played as Cooley's and The Mason's Apron but nobody had bothered their arse to find out the names which was a good start. The instruments featured were a couple of fiddles, a whistle, a banjo and one of those horrible Bodhrans that was made from a oil drum. I have two words to describe it....'Jesus Wept' and so did I (I know, I know, that's six words but you know what I mean......)
What recordings have made you cringe ?????

"Irlande." Not that that there's much wrong with the music, but the out-of-time clapping by the audience on several tracks is abysmal. It is not quiet and it is not slightly out. I can't understand why the artists ever allowed it to go out.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

Some of the 2nd rate Ceili band albums you get cheap in somewhere like Woolies are often dire; but sometimes you get a good one, or pick up a tune you hadn't heard before, so it's sometimes worth trawling.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

I wish Daniel O'Donegal's recordings counted just so that I could include them in this thread. All of 'em.

Do self recordings count?

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

Funny this came up just as I was thinking about something similar, 'worse tracks ever'... Without much thought, what made me think of it was listening to some of the shight that "Patrick Street' produced ~ for example ~

"The Land of the Patagarang"

"The Kanturk Polka / Joe Burke's"

So, shight from super groups, another case of nothing new... 8-)

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

But I realize you're wanting a 'selection', and suspecting byt that you mean a full blown album full of the obnoxious? There are two synthesizer albums I can't remember the names of ~ one was Irish, the other was Welsh... If they come to mind I'll add the specifics later...though I have worked hard to suppress those memories, as unhealthy as they potentially are... ;-)

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

I bought an album at a recent festival that contains some of the worst 'professional' playing that I've ever heard. My wife won't even let me play it in the car, it's that bad. Several times the players are out of synch with each other, and they miss half the notes at best.

To really add insult to injury, I read the sleeve notes which proudly point out that this is a 'best of' album - from TEN previous releases. They've been playing for 22 years. And they're still SH*TE!

I had it on repeat for a couple of long journeys to remind me to pull my finger out and produce a CD. It could never in a million years be as hopeless as this one.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

Why has no-one mentioned Enya yet? Just put on an Enya CD and try to imagine it unadorned by all the effects...

I suppose it did say "ITM" though...

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

There is a traditional CD called 'I Love Irish Fiddle'. Great tunes but the timing, feel and lack of lift put it in the 'Jesus wept' catagory...at least I wept. Sounds like typing. I guess timing IS in a different part of the brain.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

Frankie Gavin's Christmas carol album has to be right up there. Its the as fantastically tacky with ridiculous versions of Ruldolph etc which someone should remind him of when he slags off 'trendy trad' these days. Its funny to listen to all the same.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

outside the Barras market in Glasgow
theres a shop called "Timland"
where they play the worst, cheesiest Celtic songs imaginable really loud, so the whole street can hear them.
maybe if i was into football id appreciate them.

its depressing.
every time i hear them its make me want to stop playing anything remotely considered "celtic"

Hauke's comment is the best illustration of "no accounting for taste" I've seen in a long time!

I'll second the vote for Gavin's xmas debacle. Other late-period DeDanann and Patrick Street tracks are in the bottom 10. It's one thing when a shight musician creates shight music, but when it comes from a great musician such as Gavin, it hurts twice as much.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

Enya is all about the effects, Nicky is the one who makes the records, but Enya herself is very talented.

The worst record ever is Christy Moore "Paddy on the Road" but does not qualify as ITM.

So the worst ITM record must be "Rip The Calico" by the Bothy Band.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

I bought "Long Black Veil," played it once and then gave it away. I'd paid full price for it too. I just didn't want it in the house.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

There's an uilleann album which I had bought years ago in vinyl that's just horrid. I won't mention the piper's name. Simply the poorest playing I've ever heard on a major-label album. He can barely finger the chanter, the chanter and drones are all out of tune, he has no sense of timing, etc.
Recently, I saw that this sh*te has been released on CD.

Worse piping (but just a few tracks, not an entire album) is featured on a cheesy CD availble at markets etc called "Celtic Bagpipes". Some tracks feature a very good Northumbrian piper, others feature a very good Highland piper. However the uilleann tracks are awful. They attempted to bury the bad piping in a heavy arrangement with synths and fiddles and such, but the horrid piping still comes through. Sounds like a recorder player who is tossing on a chanter, not knowing the correct fingerings etc.

Re: The worst 'recorded' selection of ITM that you have listened to.

That last Patrick Street album with John Carty is excellent - and the rest of them weren't bad either. I had a cassette of Irish drinking songs which was painful, but nothing I've heard recorded in the ITM world (or even the borderline ITM world) compares with some of the sh*te produced in other music genres...
