Hi ive just started to play (learn) the fiddle and i would like to play some tunes that are not ITM - Irish rover forty shades of green ect .Can any one point me to a site where i might find some music for this type of music (ABC ) as i can not read music yet many thanks Des
Hi Des.
Firstly welcom to the session. its at this point you may be introduced to "llig leahcim".
He will be along shortly to tell you to learn these easy melodies by ear.
If you dont want to do that however, a lot of songs have been posted on this site as tunes, just try searching the tunes section.
I do agree with llig though, songs like Irish rover etc are pretty easy melodies to figure out by ear.
Benhall Ive just being given a fiddle by my banjo teacher and i would like to learn tunes like the irish rover -danny boy ect so i could play for friends These type of tunes can not be found in the tune section of the session .What i call ITM is tunes like The boys of bluehill -the Mist covered mountain ect .I hope this explains what i am after. Its like going into a pub and they ask for some songs rather than ITM Des
Well, to my mind at least the songs you mention are every bit as much ITM as the tunes.
I have to say though , first you need to know the tune in your head... then playing it is a lot easier, so listen to the songs you are after, play allong or sing allong I doubt you really need ABC or to read music, to pick up that kind of material.
Yes, that's what confused me as well, jig. I'd recommend Soodlum's selections of Irish Ballads with guitar Chords. Great little books, and if, they're still in print, cheap too.
1: Don't learn them by Abc, learn them by ear. It's not hard.
2: Why on Earth do you want to learn a song on the fiddle? I thought songs were for singing.
I have heard many trad musicians saying that learning to play songs on an instrument is the only thing one should NOT do, especially when learning to play the instrument! Songs have phrases and melodies for voice.
Tunes composed for fiddle are in keys compatible with the instrument's features (e.g. D or G) and have melodies that do not require difficult string changes or complicated bowing.
Well , I would strongly dissagree with that one... but each to their own I suppose....
Say; Lannigans ball.... A song, Follow me up to Carlow, Etc etc. Some slow airs were/are songs.
A lot of tunes are not designed for the fiddle... should we not play them either?
Des, try John Chambers tune finder at: http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind
When you search for a tune or song by name you'll be presented with a list of different versions, often in a variety of keys, with music notation, abc, midi file etc. for each one.

I don't understand the question. You want "tunes that are not ITM". What did you have in mind?

Re: fiddle help
This site has a ton, a lot with sheet music too. It seems to have Irish, American, English, Welsh, Scottish, Canadian and Australian folk songs:

Re: fiddle help
All these songs are also ITM ~ songs and dance are just as much part of the tradition as the tunes are! The link above is a good source...
