Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

Hi,

I have one of the V-200 fiddle pick-ups and the little metal spring has come away from the plate.

This has happened because I refit it the thing so often as I am too embarrassed to have it on the fiddle when I go a sessioning.

Anyway has anyone ever had this wee bit fall off before & tried just gluing this back on? If so did it work? What kind of glue did you use?

Many thanks,
_
N.

Re: Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

Yep, the very same thing happened to me. I tried to get it repaired and was told it couldn't be done, that they couldn't replace just the spring bit, that I'd have to get an entire new pickup ... but the same techno shop that said that stuffed the Fishman pre-amp so it no longer worked either, and then I started hacking at the plug socket because it was too heavy and I wanted to put it somewhere else (like onto the side of the shoulderrest instead of on the fiddle), so in the end the whole thing was stuffed so I didn't bother.

... but yep, I thought perhaps a little bit of weld?

Re: Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

Hey the same thing happened to me (we actually had 2 of these pickups!) They didn't even last a year! (same problem with taking them off for seisuns)
I called the company and sent them back---they repaired both free of charge!

ps---went back to playing with a good mike instead -never liked the sound quality no matter how many adjustments I had to make to the pre-amp

Re: Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

I had the same problem with my first one, and a way of dealing with this was to make a tiny little shim to place the actual piezo into the slot of the bridge. This worked allright for a time, but don't lose the shim, because making one is pretty tricky: it has to be just the right shape and size for the whole thing to work properly.

Otherwise, here's a link that might be useful: http://www.olivierpont-luthier.com/microviolon.html

It's all in french, but this is the pickup I've been using for the last four years, and has my vote. The biggest advantage of it being that it has no springwork or indeed any moving part. It's also discreet and lighter than the V-200 and it's massive mount.

A little epoxy might do the trick...

Re: Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

Having a session fiddle and a gig fiddle might be the answer.
Or, horror of horrors, try one of those Swordfish electric fiddles -they are actually excellent.

Re: Fishman fiddle pick-up broken

I have a V100 and a V200. The little spring came off of the bottom plate on the V100. I stick the bottom plate to the fiddle with a bit of that non damaging accoustcally transparent putty now.
Try various locations on the fiddle till you hit the sweet spot.
Thats all I use now. Sounds better than ever did in the bridge.
The V200 is for sale if anyone is interested..half price!.
