Imagine these at a session...

Imagine these at a session...

Following on from the Weird Session Instruments discussion, is it only a matter of time before we see Neural Impulse Actuators at sessions?

These will be marketted initially as games controllers and here's someone playing a game with one on:

"he's firing now with his mind"
"faster than any finger"
If so, how long will it be before a session comprises of people hooked up to NIA's hooked to PCs which have some keyboard program thing, blasting out jigs and reels?
Fierce mighty craic altogether.
Session hacks will of course be eliminated, because we'll all become virtuosos in minutes......

Re: Imagine these at a session...

Yeah, but what'll happen to the rhythm when the blonde in tight jeans walks past on the way to the bar?

Re: Imagine these at a session...

I think we should bring those things in now. Then we girls would know exactly who to pour our pints over :-)

Re: Imagine these at a session...

Jim's got it right. Here's something from the liner notes on Tripswitch, the tune by At First Light:

"One night while recording... we set about trying to write a piece of music. For inspration, John decided to spark up, but with no lighters in sight, the toaster was called upon. Blowing all the fuses and tripping the switch we had to draw on the darkness for inspiration. This is what we came up with!"

A techno-punk-metal-hip-hop band would have just given up and gone home, and the tune never would have been written.

It'll be a short step to actual Looks That Could Kill.

Re: Imagine these at a session...

While I was working at the BBC I heard a great story about a famous choral group that shall be nameless to protect the innocent. They were being recorded by a state-of-the-art digital mobile studio somewhere in London, and the group had a strict agreement about exactly when the recordings were being made. Unfortunately there was some sort of technical glitch which rendered a few sections of the performance absolutely useless, and they recorded some of a subsequent concert (without permission). In order not to be detected they did this without any lighting in the vehicle, creeping around quietly and working by the light of one candle. Nice story and seems appropriate as the work in question dated from the baroque (ie before electricity!)

Mark, that's an object lesson in why it's so important to record rehearsals!

Yes, indeed. How will it go down in some of the choicer suburbs of Glasgow, like Easterhouse or Possilpark. Brings a whole new meaning to "Stick the heid oan him Jimmy!"

Re: Imagine these at a session...

I'm a major geek. I make my living doing high end geek thingys, but games (no matter how they're controlled) bore me to death. "You control it with your mind... like telekinesis..." YAWN! What a colossal waste of time--for the players as well as the creators.

Time to crawl back into my cave...
