The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Has anyone heard Bono's tribute to Ronnie Drew?

and a Late Show(?) live version

Not your "pure drop", of course, but do you think it's a fitting tribute?

In one verse, there's a reference to "Black Velvet Band" which was actually sung by Luke kelly and, more recently, Sean Cannon. Has Bono not done his homework? :-)

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Black Velvet Band was sung by everyone.

Great to see Ronan Keating in there...
Very fitting

"Black Velvet Band was sung by everyone"

True, even by me......

Who's being pedantic now? :-)

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Pretty good, but why does he have to sing with a Deep South USA accent?
Like your new monicker, ermm....Juliet.

"Like your new monicker, ermm....Juliet"

From a past life.... No, I was never a Juliet, by the way :-)

Just how we used to spell, that's all.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

I am not a lover of the song at all. Damien Dempseys part is class though

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Well, I was once a Lisa..Lisa Lane. An appeal to cut me some slack :-)

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Such a dire song, reminds me of 'Here we go..here we go ..here we go. Deep down I bet Ronnie cringes when he hears it.
When you compare this song with the one about Luke Kelly 'The Red Haired Minstrel' Simply no contest.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Yeah but it's only a pop song. We're all spoiled here, as we're used to half-decent melodies.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Please, Llig and all my friends, please do all in your power to ensure that no-one does a tribute song for me.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

We were thinking of getting Dana to do something for your American Wake, BB.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

At least Dana has something. If there is ever an award for "Greatest Ar##hole of all Time" Bono is a sure fire winner, an absolute cert.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

I love that one about Bonehead (can't remember where I read it, may well have been here) where in the midle of a gig to stoney silence he's doin' that clicking his fingers every second thing and going on about everytime he clicks, a child dies. Ans someone shouts from the audience, "well stop feckin doin' it then."

Nice one Mr Llig.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Just a story, llig.

Anyway that Ronnie Drew song is atrocious, even as a "pop" song. The only positive thing about it is that it's raising money for cancer research.

I like the way Shane McGowan distanced himself from the "tribute song" and sang a snippet of a song in tribute instead.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

"De mortuis nil nisi a Bono"...?!

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Hate the chorus, very lazy Bono.

Some of the verse's have some well constructed lines though!

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Never saw the appeal of Bono, still can't get it, didn't like him on Live Aid or since.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

Must have taken two and a half minutes to write this, and still poor for that time. I have written masterpieces in 10 minutes, but then Bono is not a musician. Not sure what he is.

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

he's a t w a t

# Posted on March 27th 2008 by llig leahcim

Re: The Ballad of Ronnie Drew

mmmmm... "t w a t" is a bit harsh especially when he speaks so highly of you !

Funny haven't much of an opinion either way on Bono , but I find it interesting that anyone I know who doesn't like him because of the "know it all attitude" seem to to also have that characteristic themselves.....and eh....well....I haven't changed my mind on that after this thread.
