i'm a musician studying art, which is a mistake in itself because music is my passion and ends up being shoved aside for school. so in attempt to make the most of both worlds, i applied for a summer program at the burren college of art with the intention of catching some music while i'm there. which is now feeling like another mistake, because i want to be IN the music, not just finding it in my free time.
so, what i'm wondering is if there are any suggestions as to how to spend the most time in ireland (this school program is a month long) for the cheapest amount (yes, i've considered couch surfing and hostels, but i'm an insecure, vulnerable female who is easily intimidated by these things).
what are some workshops, festivals, pubs, concerts, anything and everything to check out?
Since you will be in The Burren, take off into the hills hiking. The hillside above the Ailwee caves is an especially great place to hike in The Burren and from the top on a nice day, you can see all the way to Galway. There was a weekly session in Ballyvaughn when I was last there, so if its still on, you have music and a pub a short walk from the school. Also, if you have a way to get there, Kilfenora is not so far away. There are regular ceilis there with music by the Kilfenora Ceili Band.
Sorry, I have no recommendations about spending the most time for the cheapest amount. I hope you are able to spend some time hiking around The Burren, though. It is an incredibly beautiful place. And its free. Have a great time!
You can go to the tourist sessions ie/ In doolin - o'connors
or McGanns and so you should for the Craic, anyway..
But if you find out where Tommy Peoples and them sort of
musicians are playing Sessions you hear some Great Irish
Music,, Also look out for a friend of mine A concertina player
called Terry Bingham - He'll know where to go,,
Around Burren / Doolin Listonvarna Area..
Tell him When you catch up with him - Jim McAuley from Larne,
Co,Antrim ,Was asking about him,,,
jim,,
The Burren College of Arts is a few miles outside of Ballyvaughan, if you want to go anywhere you'll need transport.
There's a session in Monks in BallyV every sunday afternoon (around four) in Monks one week it's Brid O Donohue (usually with some of the children) the other week Seamus Hynes.
Tommy P lives in Donegal now and has done for the last few years, though he occasionally pops down to Clare. 'Craic' in Doolin? You must be seriously kidding!
Hannahseng, why not invest some money in a decent guidebook? There's one whose title's on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't recall it.

I'm not certain as it has been years since I visited the area, but I do believe that you could easily get to An Spideal. I can't recall the name of the pub but it's a bit off the main road...anyway, there were some wonderful sessions to be heard there. Also, on the main road was a small shop where a young man was making Bodranai....nice fellow with great enthusiasm.
Then again, just across Galway Bay is Galway itself....well worth exploring.
The B&B's were easily affordable in 1999...not sure how things are with the Euro as the tender of the day.

The area is great for walking ( http://www.ballyvaughanfanorewalkingclub.com/ )

Just be prepared to be shocked at the expense. Ireland is a lot more expensive than you think.
