Hi! I used to have Cakewalk, but alas it won't go on the new comuter. Do any of you have good suggestions.? I need it to a) write out tunes b) insert text c) hopefully it will figure out the bars by itself!! d) can take on any midi and write it out itself!
thanks
If your new computer is using Microsoft XP as its OS then it's quite possible that it won't accept your older version of Cakewalk. For instance, Hendrick Norbeck had to come out with a new version of ABCMus to cope with the demands of XP, and this sort of thing isn't unusual. I suggest you contact the Cakewalk people to see if they have an XP-compliant version.

I downloades an appearently terricic programe from "melody assistant " from
" www.myriad -online.com"
It does everything from change instruments , transpose up/ down to 12 s.t
DO NOT TRY TO GET HELP they art NUTTERS.
The giant help programe tells you everything but it take a lot of reading ( Eu18 /$18US, Shareware ) Download free test & buy or??I had terrible trouble with a simple transcription mistake. I missed a slur on a 3 beat note ( in 1 bar ) to a 1 b in the next bar. In the end I deleted the notes from the 2 bars, Copied the rem. of the tune edited the 2 bars & pasted the remender back .
ALL the time, space etc caracters appear to be there. You can get away easily enough after reading.
Good luck ( I am not a player & think about it, an almost impossible task

There's a shareware program called noteworthy composer that has a loyal following but if you can afford it Sibelius is (in my opinion) the best and most intuitive notation program available.
I used Melody Assistant for years, and recently upgraded to their higher end prodect, Harmony Assistant. Boorinwood is right, customer service is questionable, but they are in France so there may be a language barrier more than anything. Since it is not U.S. written, some of the program and menu logic is a little strange, but once you get used to it things aren't bad. It will handle ABC, MIDI, Karaoke files and many others. You can read in an ABC, then flesh it out, or enter notes and output the ABC. Lots of good stuff. I kept looking at more expensive software, even Sibelius at $700 or so, and Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant will do things easily, that a lot of the others are harder to use, or not capable of at all. The other gripe is formatting output is a little tough, but for getting notes on the page, or moving from one format to another, they're great.
Luck,
Bruce
thanks,
I think a shareware is most appropriate at the moment. Yes I have XP and my Cakewalk programme is 5 years old!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't fo r the life of me afford Siberius at $700 !!! So a decent one easy to follow and easy to use as a download would be enough.

Re: notation software
What kind of 'new' computer do you have that won't load Cakewalk?? Cakewalk is one of the biggest names in music software.
