Danu Tune ID

Danu Tune ID

On "The road less travelled" by Danu the track 5 starts with a tune they call "The Fairy Reel". It links to a slip jig whith the same name ;-)
The tunes listed here as "Fairy" are all not the one they play but it sounds very familiar to me, I think it's a piper's classic, maybe known form Tommy Reck (?)
Anyway - what is another title for the tune?

Re: Danu Tune ID

The tune on the Danu CD is listed here as The Fairy *Dance*:
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/424.
The link on the Recordings page is incorrect.

This tune I played years ago and I think it is not that much the one Danu plays - Any other hints?

Re: Danu Tune ID

This is a rough transcription of Danu's playing:

X:1
T:Fairy Reel, The
S:Danu
Z:Nigel Gatherer
L:1/8
M:4/4
K:D
g |: f>Ad>g f>Ad>g | f>Ad>e c>de>g | f>Ad>f g>fe>d |1 c>Ab>c d4 :|2 c>Ab>c d>ef>g ||
a2 a>g b>bB>A | G>ee>e a>aa>g | f>ad>f g>fe>d |1 c>Ab>c d>ef>g :|2 c>Ab>c d4 ||

You'll have to take our word for it that it's a version of that old standard "The Fairy Dance".

Re: Danu Tune ID

Nigel,
thanks for your version, the second is very near to what Danu play (minus a few wrong octaves).
You have convinced my now: It is a close relative to the mentioned tune, but there are some differences ;-)

Re: Danu Tune ID

Yes, sorry about that, I did it in a hurry. This should be better, and any octave leaps are now deliberate, as this is what I heard on the recording.

X:1
T:Fairy Reel, The
S:Danu
Z:Nigel Gatherer
L:1/8
M:4/4
K:D
g |: fAdg fAdg | fAde cdeg | fAdf gfed |1 cABc d4 :|2 cABc defg ||
a2 ag b>bBA | Geee aaag | fadf gfed |1 cABc defg :|2 cABc d4 ||
