"As part of a new 9 part Traditional Music series for TG4, actor Jeremy Irons has taken it upon himself to learn the art of Traditional Irish fiddle playing under the guidance of musician extraordinaire Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. The focus of the programme is for Jeremy to give his first public performance as a fiddler, which will take place during The 2008 Fiddle Fair."
WHAT?! >_>
Is that broadcasting now or what? I definitely would not want to miss this musical madness!
well, some of this at least has been afoot for a while, because there was an item somewhere about irons going to the clancy week fiddle class a july or two ago....
I think this has been planned for some time, Jeremy Irons was down at the Baltimore wooden boat festival last year, where he turned up to a ceillidh where I was playing, with a guitar, and ended up joining us for a few tunes. He said at the time that he was going to learn fiddle from someone in Dublin,(didn't mention it was Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh). For those interested Baltimore Fiddle Fair takes place from 8-11 May, http://www.fiddlefair.com/ and Jeremy's performance is scheduled to take place on Sat.10th in Glebe Gardens, at the afternoon concert.
(By the way, this is Baltimore, Ireland, not the other one!)
As a format the idea of a celeb being taught from scratch isn't new.....but what wouldn't I give to have an opportunity to learn from a master musician like that. Wish I could get nine weeks of fiddle lessons from Liz Carroll. What a dream come true that would be.
Lucky so and so, I don't care, really, not much, well a bit, not jealous at all so there!
Won't it be nice to see Mr Irons making a success of this 'cos it seems he wants to have a proper 'go' at it. Good luck to him.
Not exactly starting from scratch. He played the violin in his school orchestra
"So I continued through my next school, which takes me up to the age of 17, moving from the bottom stream of one year into the bottom stream of the next year, all the way through. I showed other talents which gave me self-respect, which is fine. I captained the rugger 15, and I did very well in the CCF, which we call the corps. It's military training, officer training. I think they do it on a voluntary basis now, but everybody used to have to do it. That allowed me to have enormous fun, and like anything that you do with great enthusiasm, you do well in it, and I became the top rank you can become, which is a regimental sergeant major. We had a lot of fun. I played the violin in the orchestra and enjoyed that. I had also done one play. "
Ponsonby J. Britt wrote: "... acting has nothing to do with commiting things to memory or a sense of timing ..." - I can't believe I read that; there must have been a major clerical error somewhere!
Jeremy Irons knows what it takes to acquire the skills to reach the top in one of the most difficult of the artistic professions; I'm sure he'll apply that knowledge to making a success of playing the fiddle.
"Ponsonby J. Britt"------now there's a name for ya.
Right out of a Punch cartoon---or better yet, "Lives of the Bengal Lancers". Yessiree !!! makes me 'proud to be an American'.

Re: Jeremy Irons...and Caoimhin o'Raghallaigh?
Why is Jeremy's fiddle always flat?
Because he Irons it.

Re: Jeremy Irons...and Caoimhin o'Raghallaigh?
He's a great actor.
I heard he slayed a dragon once.
I'm not sure if that is true.
But he is still a great actor.
He'll most likely fail at music cause acting has nothing to do with commiting things to memory or a sense of timing.
Aye, there's the rub. Western thinking at best.
I do wish Jeremy the best.
And he's still a great actor.

and he's lived in West Cork for ages. Can't be any worse than your average fiddle wannabe.

Sarcasm is essentially verbal; it rarely comes across well in print.

Re: Jeremy Irons...and Caoimhin o'Raghallaigh?
I observe that Ponsonby J Britt resides in Colorado.
Something tells me he may be . . . American
c.g. (first name Welsh, second name German)

Re: Jeremy Irons...and Caoimhin o'Raghallaigh?
I thought he resided in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota.
