Went home after work last night.... ate the spuds... went into the room and put in the foinn seisiun 1, CD 2. Selected the silver spear, father kelly's no 1 and Miss Monaghan's.... picked up my fiddle.... pressed play ..... and played the whole lot through with no fu*k ups.
I actually sounded ok. Intonation was grand and rythm was in time with the cd.... the whole way through... WOO HOOO

I like your use of the "Woo hoo!" too, that's one of my favorite exclamations. I like to go those really stuffy sessions where they all sit there looking miserable, and then right in the middle of a set I yell "Woo hoo!", hop up and start sean-nos dancing with a big grin on my face. Shakes 'em up something wicked. It's good for your soul. Everybody now, all together:
Congrats, I know the feeling! I love those CDs for practicing. I don't know if they're too fast, though I certainly find many of the tracks challenging. But I figure that if you can play along comfortably at those tempos then you're ready for an average session.
Yay for you, session savage! Thanks for sharing this--you've given hope to anyone plugging along to reach that level of playing, and you've reminded some of us old codgers of how good it felt the first time we played at that level.
The good news is that once you've found the fiddler inside you, it never completely goes away (although s/he can be rather adept at hide and seek now and then ). And now you can look forward to many more woo hoo moments. Eventually, they stream into one long ecstasy every time you play.
I don't own the CDs, but I just tried playing along to the samples that are freely available to stream at http://cdbaby.com/cd/cultrlainne1 .
They have about 40 tunes there and the sound samples are once through most of them (twice for single reels). I found I knew about 30 of them well enough to play along at their tempo.
They seem to be taking the reels in the 98-106 bpm range (roughly - I didn't time them carefully), which is about as slow as you're likely to find them in a session (other than a slow learners' session). It's well below dance tempo, but I think it's the best range in which to balance the rhythmic and melodic aspects of the tunes and to encourage inclusivity.
On the other hand, I thought the polkas were way too slow. Britches sounds like a march.
Heh, session savage, looks like you started playing four or five months after I did - and it was about four of five months ago that I started actually enjoying listening to myself play. (Quite a different thing from enjoying *practising*, which blessedly has been the case from Day One.)
It was around then, too, that my teacher introduced me to someone as one of his students, "who's a good fiddler now". It didn't even immediately register that my teacher described me as *good* (which I'm not, really; I'm just precocious); I was just dazzled that he'd described me as a *fiddler*. And I am. When I began this journey almost two years ago, I thought I'd just be learning to play the fiddle; it didn't take me long to realize that this process could be better described as *becoming a fiddler*. Every now and again I just want to shout at the top of my lungs, "Hey, everybody! I'M A FIDDLER!" It's the greatest thing in the world, and it just gets better.
Do you know that if you go to the Comhaltas page you can listen to (and even dowload if you want) them all there... http://comhaltas.ie/shop/detail/foinn_seisiun_book_volume_1/
No need to just listen to the clips where they only play once through. There's also the 2 cd on there if you look around a bit (it's in the shop section).

Re: Woo hoo
Actually yeah, a little bit. I hate when tunes are played too fast, not just when I'm playing but when I'm just listening too.
