Folkways podcasts

This isn't directly related to ITM, but I reckon everyone should be aware of the stupendous series of podcasts available to download from Smithsonian Folkways, recounting the story of the Folkways label - http://www.folkways.si.edu/learn_discover/folkways_collection.html.

That's 24 hour-long programmes in total, providing not only a tremendous account of one of the US's most important folk music labels, but an astonishing array of music.

Re: Folkways podcasts

Absolutely vital stuff. Essential listening, clear your Ipods of all the dross and get this on.

Indeed, anybody missing the chance to acquire these recordings really will be kicking themselves.

Re: Folkways podcasts

Many thanks, Mac. Great stuff. I've just downloaded the 24 podcasts into iTunes via the RSS feed - it took just over 2 hours on my system. The files are in 128kbps mp3 format.

BTW, the URL for the RSS feed (which is a little way into the text, so it isn't instantly obvious) is: http://www.folkways.si.edu/resources/audio/podcast/folkways.rss

Re: Folkways podcasts

Thanks for all the kind comments! If only other labels adopted such a generous policy with their archive material.

As an addendum, owning a copy of Harry Smith's 'Anthology of American Music' compilation is absolutely essential.
