Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

Hi all

Seeing as in my discussions about Irish and Celtic backing has seemingly made people mention the guitarist Jim Murray, a very fine player and very well respected in his field but I feel that people whom think that he is the best or only innovator should have a look or listen to;

Jon Sanders played/recorded with; Mary Black, Begley, Eilis Kennedy.

Tim Edey (played/recorded with Lunasa, Session A9, Anam, Begley, Sharon Shannon, Brendan Power, Mary Black).

and Mike Galvin; Niamh Ni Cara, dance on moon etc

So their ya go, 3 other innovators al with huge experience and incredible guitar technical skills also....

Tim Edey is my pick of the bunch. Heard him live with Seamus Begley last year (plenty of power and "umph" on stage there!). Like you say, incredible guitar skills.

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

JIm Murray is a cut above that lot I think, he's a really excellent player but in terms of innovation, musicality and outright genius Cooney is still miles ahead of them all.

He's able to fit in with everyone from the Begleys to Martin Hayes to Tony MacMahon and his partner harpist Laoise Kelly. There's a lot more to him than the super fast rhythmic stuff he's known for. All the other nylon string guitarists are mere imitators in my opinion, no matter how good they actually are.

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

this seems to be a continuation of another thread re Cooney and his many admirers/copiers/clones. I have to agree with frisbee that Jim is the only one of the above that cuts the mustard though. His has added his own ideas and innovation to Cooneys general style while the others remain as you say "mere imitators"
Of the ones you mention above, Sanders is a very good all round player, i 've never heard of Galvin I confess, but Tim Edey? Catch a grip, Killarney rules! Heard him with Begley a few years back, in a word - brutal. ruined the gig for me.

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

mcclathchey how can you speak such bullsh*ter running down one of best backers and guitarists Tim Edey?
ive seen him with Begley many times and with lunasa, unbelievable and by far the best along with Cooney.

he mustve had bad night.... as he rules

Whoa there my Killarney buddy!!! What's the big deal? I've never heard of the Edey guy but I did catch Murray and Begley in Oz a couple of years back and loved the vibe of the guitar...he's a gem of a guitarist, that feller.

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

I think the general problem some people have with Tim Edey is that he's just too damn good!

He's so virtuosic that he can sometimes come across like he's showing off, I don't think he means to do this, I think he's just naturally buzzing with so many ideas that he can't help throwing them all out there and sometimes this can seem to overwhelm the music. He's a very, very talented musician and does things I haven't seen anyone else do, but he's clearly too over the top for many people.

I've seen him with Seamus Begley and enjoyed it, if only for the madness the two of them generated, it was a wild and unpredictable gig, I think he suited Begley well, in other situations he doesn't fit in so well, he tends to really overplay on slow music. Jim Murray is probably able to do all the things that Edey does but he's got a lot more restraint so that's why I'd rate him a notch above.

Edey's a great box player by the way, a talented guy really, just not always my cup of tea when he's backing.

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

Killarney Rules I could not agree with you more...... Cooney is LEGEND boy, and no one comes close by a mile!! i grew up on Cooney and Begley in the Lobby Bar....unbelievable!!!! Jim Murray is the only natural successor though (yet another top Cork musician) and that is maybe bacause Cooney had a hand in nurturing this obvious talent. Murray has the talent, oozes ability, energy, attitude, and versatility and has all the top gigs to prove it. After Murray comes Irelands best steel string player and that has to be Arty Mc Glynn.. another LEGEND boy!!!!, he just has the most amazing everything and he really started guitar in Irish music. Credit where credit due!!

As for who fills the gap on the Begley and cloney gig or what other guitarists in any way fills Cooneys shoes......Murray is the only man to pull it off followed by maybe Sanders and i have not heard this guy Galvin but as for that fella Eday it makes the memory of Cooney in his prime even more painfull. Eday might have something to offer (to get gigs in Dingle of all places) but I certainly dont get him and the end result with Eday sadly is not music. As we say in Cork he is a bit like a bad camogie player looking for a place on da hurling team!!!!

I would not fear though.......Cooney forever boy!!!!!!
Great thread 'Killarney Rules'!

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

Ah, so we're dinglediamond today then.
Who are you trying to fool with your silly usernames. It's blatently clear who you are and I can't believe that you would go to such extremes to promote yourself like this.
begley&cooney 4 ever, killarney rules, dingle diamond or to go by your official username celtic box PATHETIC !
At this stage would the real TIM EDEY stand up !!!!!
I've looked through previous posts from celtic box and the same language and typo's regularly appear.
Let's face it "mate" (another favourite word of yours) your a joke!!!
Enjoy your gigs in Scotland as I can't see you getting much work in Ireland after you slagging off the standard of music there.
What an egotistcal and plonker !!!

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

maybe a bit OTT there girllovestrad, I wonder did he dump you at some stage!! I thought I did smell a rat myself and I suppose Edey does has a reputation as being pretty egotistical but, even though I'm not a fan of the boy's music, I think it's a bit far-fetched to suggest that anyone would go so far as to use all those usernames to promote himself.

Suspicious defence though!!!

Re: Take a look out for the following guitarists if you like Steve Cooney's legendary work

Just overheard Eady in Glasgow saying he is Celtic Box and Dinglediamond.

Really dislike his music and think he is a bit of a nut job if this is what he is up to!
