How do you tape a bodhran?

How do you tape a bodhran?

Hello all,

Recently i bought a Hedwitschak RWE which has tape around the edge of the skin. Before that i played a non tunable Walton's of which the sound is not too great.

My girlfriend wants to learn the bodhran as well, so she picked up the walton's, but i want to improve its sound a bit, so i'd like to tape it.

Can somebody tell me how to tape a drum? Because to me it seems that when you tape a circular object its difficult to apply the tape without uneven patches or ripples on the sides. i hope i'm describing this accurately but i'm dutch and my english might fail me here. Hopefully you know what i mean.

Any pointers and tips would be very welcome!

grtz,

Martijn

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Why don't you see if your girlfriend want's to lean something like the whistle instead?

"How do you tape a bodhran?"

As securely and tightly as possible to the box room wall.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Get an old tape recorder or cassette machine, spool it up (or stick in a cassette), plug in a microphone, get a level, press the play & record buttons and operate the goatskin drum into it. That's how you tape a bodhran.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Start at a point about an inch over the side of the skin but not over the tacks. Slowly and carefully work the tape around the skin maintaining constant pulling and pressing pressure whilst gaining about half the width of the tape with each full revolution around the drum. Continue until there is about an inch and a half of tape on the face of the skin.

It's the pulling and pressing pressure when done correctly that avoids the ripples and uneven patches. Use the drum you've just received from Christian as a guide.

Good luck.

Peace,
Ed

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Most commonly used is electrical insulating tape.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

To elaborate on what ejsant said, black electrical tape has a certain amount of elasticity. It's the stretch that lets you avoid wrinkles. It's actually fairly easy to do, and if you mess up just peel it up and try again.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

The trick is to get several rolls of the stuff, maybe as much as 40 or 50 rolls. Keep going round and round until the weight of the tape really deadens the sound. Just keep going until you can hardly hear the drum any more.

Nice one Michael, that's one of your more witty responses!

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Why would you have a drum if you can't hear it?

Do not worry Martijn 573, melody players are extremely jealous of bodhran players because the punters love bodhran players. Instead of simply accepting this, they tend to act like spoilt children around bodhran players.

What about Rudy Guiliani? Okay, sorry! SORRY!

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Never mind everyone else Martijn, they're just jealous of bodhran players because we can play along to any tune. If you want to tape the bodhran properly just tape an inch or two at a time. Dont rush it. Maybe its best if you try it out on an old bodhran first before you try it out on a good one. Just for practise.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

You might try re-posting your question at www.bodojo.com to get a straight answer. There's a little too much bodhran hating going on here.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Can there ever be 'too much bodhrán hating'? I really do hope not.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Problem is that there are too many folks who think they can just pick up a bodhran and whack away. It's even worse if they have some training in percussion. Those guys are dangerous.

Great example-Our church's music director seems to have come in to a bodhran and gave it to the fellow who plays timpani and drums along with her choir and musicians, telling him to just play it for their St. Pat's soire. Poor fellow couldn't even figure out how to hold the beater much less make intelligible sound.

In this case, I think duct tape would have been the appropriate way of taping that bodhran ;-)

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

depends how many cuts and slashes you put in the skin.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Thats all I need - a goat basher who thinks he can bash along to any tune.
Time to bring out my favorite sets in 5/4, 7/4 and 10/4.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Play them while cossack dancing at the same time, Geoff, no bother to me. 5/4 etc means nothing to me. You play the tune, I'll back it.

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

Whats the difference between a bodhran and a foot spa.
A foot spa Bucks up the Feet while a bodhran Fu..............

Re: How do you tape a bodhran?

No need to tape it or even box it or disguise it in any way. The trashmen will still take it with the rest. (just kidding--I love the bodhran and the bones---hardly anyone can play "bones"
with any real verve----too hard for y'all percussion people ???
