Standard guitar tuning for backing

Standard guitar tuning for backing

Can anyone direct me to examples (if any exist) of folks that back tunes using standard guitar tuning? Are there any web sites/cd's etc that cover this.

I'm finding learning all the chords over again in DADGAD a frustrating experience. I'm even less familiar with drop d tuning.

Standard: Dennis Cahill (with Martin Hayes)
Drop D isn't too different to Standard. You are only changing one string and chords on the top 3-4 strings are exactly the same as Standard with the advantage of that bottom D on the 6th string when you want it.

I'm not saying it's good - but it is "an example"!

Re: Standard guitar tuning for backing

Frank Kilkelly's book, ACCOMPANYING IRISH MUSIC ON GUITAR, gives examples of backing tunes in standard, drop-d, dadgad, and dadgbd, with three or 4 sets of tunes backed in each tuning. There's an accompanying CD that has Frank backing the tunes, and additional tracks with just the melody for you to accompany on your own.

Re: Standard guitar tuning for backing

I'll second that Tony Byrne uses standard. He's absolutely phenomenal. Knows a great deal of tunes on the guitar as well, and is a walking encyclopedia of tune settings, origins, and recordings.
