Since "The Wild Swans at Cooley" was mentioned in the "Very Hard Tunes" discussion -- it made me think of how much Reavey's tunes have 'changed the world.'
Ed Reavey was surely one of the unique masters of composing "more contemporary Irish dance music tunes" who seemed to have 'an absolute calling' for it. Liz Carroll's setting of the Wild Swans at Cooley -- on the "Reavey tribute album" that came out years ago -- truly made the hair on the back of my neck stand up -- I just find it pretty thrilling. Just imagine how much the "poorer" we'd be on this Earth if we didn't have Ed Reavey's tunes floating around in the hemisphere -- to offset all the greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting chemicals up there!

I do thin so MacC. Mine has a big picture of Ed Reavey on the cover, and is an old 33 LP.
I do not know if it is available in CD format. I would think Ed Reavey's son would have made it available though. It has a top crew of musicians playing Reavey's tunes, starting out with Liz Carroll playing the Wild Swans at Cooley. Obviously, since it's an LP, I got it quite a long time ago.
Interesting suggestion that the man from Cavan might be the answer to global warming! Wonder what other beneficial tunes might be floating about up there. Purple Haze, hey baby, it's all in my eyes, scuse me while I kiss the sky.
Once I was in cavan and a man from Co,Antrim said to
me ''Hey boy the worlds aff its Plumb'' I laught at him then
--- But I dont laugh so loudly now,,lol.
jim,,,
I must remember to check the "COMMENTS" section in the future. That would have 'cued' me that the recording McC was referring to was, indeed, the same one I was thinking of.
LOVE that Shoemaker's Daughter tune, too!! I believe i've heard Brendan M play that tune once - just in a very small gathering of people -- so I have the sound of the big glorious tone of Brendan's playing melded to that tune melody -- on the tune track in my brain.
I checked the link and searched the data base. I don't see any indication that the Reavey record is in the catalogue at all now, or availalbe through Rounder. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Linda
P.S. Another recording I recently researched, to try to repurchase, is Frankie Gavin's flute CD from Gael Linn --- I wrote to them. No dice. It's not availalbe, it's not scheduled for re-release -- and they "ain't got any." (sic) Of course, I could pay $65 to get a copy through Amazon, but I'm afraid that money is going to either my vet or my own doctor.
Oh there is something about Liz Carroll's setting that is just FABULOUS -- to my ear.
I "like" the Kane sisters' version, but Liz's version gives my goosebumps goosebumps.
It's conceivable that the Kanes play it more exactly the way Paddy Fahey played or plays it (whatever) -- but -- in this particular case --- I"d have to give Liz Carroll the gold medal for her setting and interpretation.
And therein lies a great deal of what's so wonderful about this music. The same basic tune can be brought to life many different ways -- and can almost be "played with like an Escher print" until the design changes itself into something other-than-itself.
I don't know if that album is still available on CD, but after being reminded by this thread of its existence and absence from my collection, I had no trouble purchasing it as an MP3 download from Amazon.com. I don't know if "commercial" links are allowed here, but if you go to Amazon.com, select MP3 Downloads, and search on "Liz Carroll", the list of MP3s generated include a number from that album, and then you can click on the album and get to the entire thing.
Actually, that link has an "also available on CD" link, and that seems to indicate that they still have the CD in stock, too. But MP3 download is a lot faster and saves you quite a bit of money.

FId42: What's this Reavy tribute album?
I listened a lot to "At Reaavy's House", and another collection of Reavy's tunes wouldn't go amiss!

Re: Reavey's tunes
Hi McCruis, I thought so, but I wasn't certain and can't dig out the album cover to check the tunes right now, as head is "splitting" for some reason.
Anyway, yes, sorry -- I didn't mean to "muddie the waters," and your reference was the initial one and the correct one.
