oldies but goodies

oldies but goodies

Not anything earth-shattering, just wanted to share...

I'm listening to "After Hours" by the Bothy Band, and am once again completely awestruck by the energy and musicianship. And what sort of tunes are they playing? The Kesh, and The Butterfly, and Kid on the Mountain, and Farewell to Erin/Ireland... the sort of everybody-knows-them tunes that some people turn up their noses at.

To those who disdain the well-known tunes: If they are good enough for the likes of the Bothy Band, and can sound that impressive, you need to rethink your position on those "boring tunes that everybody knows."

But the Bothy Band would not be out and out purists.

Well said Mickray, I have been arguing the same point for years.

Re: oldies but goodies

Maybe those tunes are overplayed and everybody knows them because of the Bothy Band. It's not the tunes that are boring, it's the people who spend week after week for decades trying to pretend that they are their favorite bands. I'll bet that if the Bothy Band had recorded a completely different collection of tunes, those instead of these would be the ones that everybody knows and some people turn up their noses at.

Re: oldies but goodies

bliss--not Pure Drop, maybe, but a bit too pure for Eurovision, don't you think? ;>}

GaryA--True, but it's not just about those particular tunes. Banish Misfortune, Rights of Man, Drowsy Maggie, etc. etc. sometimes get scant respect, and deserve better.

And hey, like I said, nothing earth-shattering. I'm just makin' conversation, here....

Re: oldies but goodies

I never heard The Kesh before the Bothies recorded it - I think they made it popular. But maybe I'd been leading a sheltered life.
