Tempo markings

Tempo markings

I'm doing my GCSE music at school and for my composition I had to do a jig. But the exam board is really picking and it wont mark my work if I havent got proof that my composition has the right tempo marking for a jig. My music teacher told me to find a traditional jig that has a tempo marking at the top, something like dotted crotchet = 130 -140, but you don't normally get tempo markings on traditional music, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Any suggestions would be welcome please!!
Thanks!!!!

"Page 19. Double jig - Dotted crochet = 126 bpm

Mel Bay's Complete Irish Fiddle Player by Peter Cooper

Best of luck with the GCSE, and I won't say anything about Exam Boards and traditional music being incompatible!

Re: Tempo markings

I still think thats a bit fast . 120 is plenty. 115 would be a bit laid back, 126 would definitely put more skip in your step8-)

Re: Tempo markings

126[ IMO] is too fast for dancing, for any length of time.
I use115 to 120
for reels 200 to 210,although I halve it so its set on100 to105.
polkas 138to 141,
hornpipes145 to 150,
slides 142 approx.

Re: Tempo markings

Hello Nicky

If it's your composition you've every right to play or sing it at the tempo you feel it should go. Whether it's a medium-paced jig or a nippy one it's your perrogative.
The examaning body are not going to be as picky in the way you imagine. You just need to state 'medium' or 'fast' (or whatever) jig tempo and add the metronome mark that YOU consider right.
Hope that helps. All the best with the exam.

Re: Tempo markings

I agree - whatever tempo feels right.

I've been playing double jigs for a while at 140bpm, and didn't realise that was too fast!

I'm doing my A Levels at the moment, and some of my friends are doing Music A2: sounds like a lot of work... I'm in 5 music groups, so I avoided taking it as a subject.

Apparently you can do a Folk Music degree at Newcastle!

Re: Tempo markings

Can you post your tune on here when you've written it?
