Hello Everyone!....
i was just wondering does anybody know any nice slow airs?
and if they are on thesession.org are they filed under a waltz?for exmaple i was looking for an buachaill caol dubh but a load of waltzs and strathspeys came up.....
well tanx..

Go to Tunes, click Search Tunes, then click All Tunes: a drop-down list will appear of all the tune categories that exist for this site. Every tune entered has to be entered in one of these categories.
The implication is that slow tunes that have a definite rhythm can be entered one way and another, but slow airs whose notes are elastic in length cannot be. (Although musicographers over the last couple of centuries have made quite ingenious attempts to capture such tunes in conventional notation, and may well have done so here!)
I should guess that nearly all the slow tunes in the database will be entered under "reel" (i.e., 4/4) or "waltz" (3/4).
There might be the odd one under "polka"(2/4) or "strathspey" (4/4). This does not exclude odd ones in other types.
Any submitter of a slow tune who takes half an interest will announce it as such in his comments. The Midi soundtrack of the tune is usually deceptive, mind, playing it a lot faster than the tune would be played.
Erm, do yourself a favor Lydia and learn an air by ear. Going from sheet music will likely result in a stilted version of the tune. Find a sean nos singer or someone who plays airs and learn one from them.
Yes! ~ by ear, as with any of this music, but you can follow the recording links to find an ear full... There are a slew of airs on site here, and here are just a few, starting with the most recent ~
"An Chúilfhionn" / "An Coolin'" / "The Coolin'"

There are other things that can qualify as 'slow airs', less of a problem than say these, such as "The Dawning of the Day", slow marches, laments, O'Carolan tunes, etc., including the art of playing a dance tune, like a reel, slowly...
C, I can't understand how do you do that.
I mean, if someone asks 'Does anybody know any slide from Kazakhstan in C#?' here you come with lots of links...
Do you really have the whole tune database in your head?
Just wondering...
Sorry, can't help you with Kazakhstan slides Ramiro. Do they have jigs or anything of that sort. Damn, now you've got me started I've got to go check it out... I would much rather be in Catalonia or Galicia...
If you search for "slow air" "The Session: Tunes" using the search box on the home page of thesession.org, you currently get 95 hits, which is probably the majority of the slow airs appearing here. It should find all tunes where the term "slow air" appears in the comments section and not a whole lot else (though as soon as I press "post", it should also find this discussion).
Of course, if Jeremy reads this, he might just decide to go through and delete them all.
Vipers? mmmm.... they don't dance, cobras do.
Don't know about slides, but I'm sure there is dance music in Kazakhstan too. People dance everywhere, don't they?
Just to say something related to the thread, sorry Lydia (isn't that a mode?) talking about airs I can only play Si Bheag Si Mhor and Wild Asparagus.

Have a listen to Uilleann piper Chris Langan's "Lament For The Yew Trees." It's one of the samples on the following site. http://cdbaby.com/cd/sarahblair
Will: "Erm, do yourself a favor Lydia and learn an air by ear."
IMHO people *can* be over-rigid about that here, but in the case of slow airs I have to agree that there is *no* other way.
I've notated a few ear-learnt slow airs for my own purposes, but only in the sense of noting a few of the more "architecturally" important notes, with some creative squiggles in between to remind me of what happens. Actually learning from dots: really not possible, unless they are dots that suggest a real performance to which you have access.
Have you seen Tomas O Canainn's "Traditional Slow Airs of Ireland" book/CD set?
You caught my intent, Lingpupa. I don't care if people who know what this music sounds like want to learn jigs, reels, etc., from sheet music. But airs are much more variable in timing, phrasing, etc. Always better to learn them by ear from someone whose playing you admire.
Yep its funny how an incredible piece of breathtaking music becomes dry. and meaningless when written down...Hmm maybe thats because Im cr@p at reading tricky rhythms
A good Air is almost like a monologue never repeating itself yet revisiting the crucial elements and important points....
Hey tanx everyone.....all them suggestions really helped!
Just to clarify a point...i totally agree about learning the airs by ear but i like to have notes with me aswell as i tend to get "extremely" muddled up when im nervous!
But again thanx....ill have a hard job 2 pick 4 for the fleadh.....or is it 6??
and yes i think Lydia is a mode....but im not....LOL

Re: Slow Airs....help...
Unfortunately for you, this website's purpose excludes the sharing of non-dance tunes such as airs.
Fortunately for you, a lot of airs seem to be posted anyhow, as waltzes and such.

You know my secret
Merry Sisters is a good album.
I do like Lunasa but I got the tune from Llan de Cubel
& in a different key.
Their title;
'Coyí d'un artu una flor'

Coincidentally again, last time I saw Lúnasa was in a festival in Asturies this summer, and Llan de Cubel played there too.
