I thought I would interject a bit of a 'fanciful" subject -- a place to rest between 'parries and thrusts' regarding the use of the bow.
DREAMS -- I have dreams in which my fiddle is a a major character on the stage.
Just this last week I didn't pick up my fiddle for a few days because my neck and shoulder were getting very sore -- wanted to give them time to recover a bit.
Sure enough, I start having 'these dreams' -- from which I wake up feeling like I've been the loser in a boxing match.
MY FIDDLE HAS DISAPPEARED. It has been moved by someone from where I had put it down. It has been sequestered in a dark, hidden corner of a remote closet that I don't even know about.
I am running around at some 'party' -- shaking like a leaf -- "Will you help me find my fiddle? Where is it? Where is it? I am absolutely in a state of panic. In my dream, I feel like I am awake and I can feel my gut falling through the souls of my shoes -- sheer utter panic. I can't find my fiddle. People are playing the fiddle all around me -- BUT I CAN'T PLAY because my fiddle has gone missing.
I have been having dreams like this -- variations on this dream -- for years. And I think they do seem to be tied to times when I'm taking a vacation from playing the fiddle for one reason or another.
The dreams are absolutely distressing. I can't tell you how many bizarre interiors of closets, "trick rooms" or strange cabinets I have stumbled upon -- where my fiddle has been placed 'for safe-keeping' by some diligent person. Maybe the fiddle was moved in order to protect it from getting stomped on or damaged, but that's not my experience of it. My experience is just......"WHERE THE HELL IS MY FIDDLE."
I think I had a regular torrent of dreams like this when I stopped playing in order to study anatomy and physiology, so I could get a job as a medical transcriptionist.
Am I alone in this -- or do others of you have bizarre dreams involving your musical instruments, your playing of ITM -- pub scenarios, etc. etc.
My brain is *the most strange thing.* I made what I thought was a constructive decision to just give my playing arm a rest for a few days --- but obviously, music is on my mind a LOT lately. I guess I really wanted to be playing. Instead of consciously thinking "I really want to be playing my fiddle even if it hurts," --- my brain starts manufacturing these dreams about my fiddle having been stuffed in the back of a closet!!!!!
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
I have dreamt of being in Ireland with sessions going on, though I remember no distinct details. The truth to life of these dreams can be assessed by the fact that I usually seem to access the country across quite a short rickety jetty, and it actually seems to be a floating island on a huge raft.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
I think that's hilarious, about the two sets of bellows.....
Maybe it's the "patting the head and rubbing the stomach" thing -- you almost might as well have two sets of bellows and need three arms -- as have to do all the different things you have to do to manage the pipes.
What looks so difficult to me is the apparent conflict of having to keep the bellows going totally smoothly, while you do all these piping ornaments that are so stacatto-like with your hands. I wonder if it is a temptation for people beginning learning the pipes to start punching on the "bag" with their elbow along with what their hands are doing. I can't imagine playing the pipes, but God I love the sound of them in the hands of an accomplished piper.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
Well linda, I am no psycoanalyst... but loseing something we love is allways a fear. There is little one can do about it. Try song, its a fall back position, no fiddle but still have a voice.
I remember years ago watching the old boys of 80,90 playing tunes on the whistle, still in fine form,it appeared to me then that the whistle was deserving of attention for a fallback position once age takes its toll.
But ultimately Its all in gods hands, what we have today could be gone tomorrow. I was in a wheel chair for a while due to a back injury. those first hours waiting were pretty intense. I recovered, but the lessons learnt have stayed with me.
I have plenty of dreams. Good ones. but I can never remember them...
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
This is a weird one... I was sitting on some grass somewhere with a friend of mine who isn't into ITM (he actually plays piano and clarinet). I was waiting fora train that was apparently due in about 15 minutes, so he pulls out a squeezebox and I get my banjo out and we played a few tunes, over which time the other guy also played the banjo. Then I dreamt that I left for the train and before I got on I checked I had everything but I'd left the banjo behind!!!!! - thats all I can remember though
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
Linda, what sorta drugs are you on? I need to know because I want to avoid them. I might give up playing for a few days and become a MT as well, over here they are known as call centre operators. I suggest you put on some Tom Waits and chill out with a large roll up.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
I've thought about starting a thread just like this. I have what might be called "flute dreams" or, more accurately, flute nightmares. I still remember the most recent one - i was trying to play my flute and the holes/keys where missing or in the wrong place. It was truly disturbing.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
A roll up is a self - made cigarette, you can add your own choice of flavouring, so I'm told by Amy...... you won't know her..... visa problems or something, mixed with the wrong crowd, kids eh, what do they know? Anyway, in todays papers, Mick Jagger has warned kids about the evils of narcotics, apparently he now prefers running, working out and kickboxing, this might explain why he hasn't written any good songs in a while, still cuts it live tho.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
RE: the part about smooth bellows action...
I fear that i may fall victim to the staccato/legato disjoint between my bellows arm and playing hand...I already do something similar in the jazz band I play with...find myself swinging in my chair along with the music and inflection.

a great reel or something ,or playing a brill tune - i've never
heard before,, But when I got up mostly tunes just fades away.

Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
Not exactly ITM, but related to Fiddle4's dream: I've dreamt before that I was about to conduct the world premiere performance of a symphony that I had written. I could hear them practicing as they warmed up, and it sounded pretty good. The only problem was, I couldn't remember ever having written a symphony in my life, and had no idea what the symphony was supposed to sound like... I realized that the music to the symphony had come to me in a dream, and that I had composed it entirely by jotting down whatever I could remember in the moments after I woke. So, my dream self searched frantically, and eventually found the notebook. I opened to the first page - and then my alarm went off.
So there I lay, no notebook, no music, and somewhere that orchestra was starting the symphony without me. It was at that point I knew it was going to be a very surreal day.
Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
A friend once said, you wake up with a tune in your head and you don't recognize it. So you play it to friends and around sessions for a while, and if nobody recognizes it, you've written it in your sleep.
Do you have to sleep for a long time to write a whole symphony?

Re: Itm dreams -- the kind you have when you sleep!
@c.g.: presumably in my dream I'd slept for a long time, on many successive nights, adding more to the symphony each night. And I'd had the presence of mind to keep a notebook near the bed. My dream self is apparently smarter than my real self. Wonder how much I've lost in the 15 seconds after waking every morning?

Last night I dreamt I was playing my mandola in a session, and two of the strings had come loose, and the more I tried to fix it the worse it got, until eventually all the strings were off and I couldn't get them back and had to give up - felt most wierd when I woke and had to play the mandola for an hour till I felt OK again.

I'm not on any drugs Stray. There aren't any more over here. They all got stuck in Tom Wait's throat.
What is a roll up, anyway??? It must be something I'm familiar with on different terms.
You guys say "jumper," we say "sweater," etc. etc. etc.

LOL - and here I thought "fruit roll-ups" Mmmm... yum.
Several years ago I spent the day at the Sebastopol Celtic Music Festival where I saw Alistair Fraser & Natalie Haas perform. WOW!
Then I had a dream where I was the one playing cello at the festival.
