Sean O Neill, All - Ireland Bodhran Champion from Newcastle Northern Ireland is going to visit Australia from Feb - May 08, He starts of in Brisbane are there any sessions he could join? He would also be willing to give a bodhran work shop if any groups over there would be interested.
Brisbane's a really nice place. It's much nicer than Sydney. You might find you end up getting stuck there for your whole stay. Domestic flights are also *really* expensive in Australia.
I spent a couple of days in Sydney a few years ago and liked it so much that is why I decided to visit Australia again. Am really looking forward to visiting Brisbane. If I get stuck there I won't mind. Have a cousin there so accommodation will be cheap I hope!!
There some excellent cheap flights from Brisbane to Sydney, as well as numerous bus and train options.
Just look up the sessions section on this website to find a welcoming session.
Even some of the ones listed as "defunct" are actually still going and will be glad to see a champion bodhran player.
The two main sessions are at the Queensland Irish Association (on Elizabeth Street in the city) on Wednesday nights and the Muddy Farmer in Annerley on Saturday arvos. QIA's a faster, 'expert' session. Muddy's more a play what you brung affair.
Dow's right about internal flights - they're usually a lot cheaper if you book them before you leave home (40-60% cheaper than buying them here in Aus) unless you luck out with a cheap offer. If you're on a tight time schedule you might not find a cheap option.
Hope you have a good stay in sunny Brisvegas - and that it is sunny. It's been p*ssing down lately .
Interesting to know that Sean is visiting down under.
If his timetable permits would he like to visit Tasmania? I know a flute player who lives out there quite well. He has connections with Co.Down, Northern Ireland, and he is a former All-Ireland Finalist.
Accommodation would be cheap as he manages a hotel on the edge of a lake in the South West National Park.
Maybe the two of you could join up together for a wee tune or two.
Actually I know a bloke who knows a bloke who makes the best bodhrans in the world and he lives just over the border from Qld in Kyogle-Gateway to the Rainforest (otherwise known as paradise)
Perhaps if Sean's people spoke to this bloke's people and the meeting of primo drum and player took place........watch this space!
Hey Sean,
All good stuff for you above but could I suggest canning the flight from Brisbane to Sydney, and travelling by hire car or van. You get to see a bit off the real country, (perfect time of year for the north coast of NSW) and there are a few sessions outside the big smoke. Welcome here for sure.

You sign yourself as Sean O Neill, but you refer to yourself in the third person. Is that one of those things like the royal "we"?
