Anybody heard of Cormac Breathnach? I just discovered his phenomenol Whistle playing on Thistle and Shamrock and was lucky enough to get one of his CDs. He's near the top of my list of whistle players along with Kevin Crawford and Kathleen Keane though I must say his style is vastly different. He does get a little on the jazzy side but he just smokes those reels. For all those whistle players tooting around out their, I suggest you buy into one of his recordings. It might bring some inspiration.
(I won't be back online till next week so don't kill me if I don't reply)
He has solo CDs- 2 I think, now, but I think his best work was as a member of the trio "Deiseal" - whistles, bouzouki and bass - an unlikely sounding combination, but sheer magic ! Get hold of those , fadah, especially the first eponymous one.
I once see him playing in a small venue in Cork, a couple of years ago.
I agree he's a brilliant player, but sorry, I don't like his style. You say "He does get a little on the jazzy side". Well, I think Mike McGoldrick does sometimes sound like that, but Cormac is too jazzy for me, and he's far from my concept of traditional music. He does .. let's put it this way, contemporary versions of traditional tunes. In a word, not my cup of tea.
I much prefer the likes of Mary Bergin, Sean Potts or Christy Barry.
