Said jig on Planxty's Words & Music LP is played in Gmaj as opposed to Gmin as played by say Martin Hayes on one of his CDs. Does anyone know what key the original is? Thing is, I like it in the maj mode.
I'd say the major version is an adaptation for the pipes, and since it's a fiddle tune, I'd bet that the minor version is the original. Having said that, it's one of those Galway kinda tunes with a blurred distinction between major and minor anyway. You know how they like to slur those Bbs all over the place, and other notes too for that matter...
Agreed.
(What? Agreeing with Dow? Don't tell anyone, please!)
The reel of the same name (? ha ha) is a very similar tune. The jig seems like a slowed down version of that.
I doubt very much that you'll find the major key version recorded before Planxty's "Words & Music", but I could be wrong. First recording of the minor version I know of was by Martin Byrnes on "Paddy In The Smoke". At a guess, at least 10 years between those 2 recordings.
CD's and memory sticks mostly, Kenny. if you have a copy I could send you a stick, if you'd be so kind. My friend and fellow Blythe-ite Paul Gross, and member of The Rakes was most interested when I told him I had Martin Byrne's solo album but try as I may I haven't been able to find it...redecorating and whatever has taken its toll.
