Hey everyone,
I was wondering if you could give me a few of your fav's. I seem to be lacking inspiration lately, and a few new tunes would be lovely. Thanks so much!
Rolling in the Ryegrass my favorite tune of all time, but I've recently come quite fond of a jig called "The Frost is All Gone", from the collections of Canon James Goodman. Give her a gander.
At the moment (it will probably change soon), my fave tune seems to be The Trip to Windsor. Blazing tune, and brilliant fun to play!
Also Farewell to Whalley Range, Pressed for Time, Farewell to Ireland, Julia Delaney, Farewell to Tchernobyl (lot of farewells... dunno why), The Donegal Lass, Boys of Malin.....
I could go on. This list is very temporary though - it'll probably be totally different on a few weeks' time!
Favorite tune, always a tricky question. Lately I've been squeezing as much as I can get out of the Silver Spear and the Musical Priest, and the jig that is sometimes Larry O'Gaff and sometimes Daniel O'Connell has been popping up a bit. Long-time favorites include the Dunmore Lasses, I never get tired of that one, and there's that slide in G with the Irish name that's a little like the one Julie Langan calls Charming Lovely Nancy but Breathnach had another name for it but it's got a different B part - the one with the Irish name, not the one Julie called for Nancy - with a lot of unexpected e's in it. You know, they both start out like Far From Home, now that's a good tune. Goes well with the Silver Spear, now that I think of it. Anyway the slide's a good one. Both of 'em, actually
(or at least, that's how the train of thought usually goes when someone asks me that question, which is why I usually just say "Red Haired Boy" and look distracted).
Lot's of great tunes mentioned here. If pushed for a particular favourite I'd go for The Kylebrack Rambler, great on fiddle, banjo, box , whistle.....great tune. Give it a shot !
PS Re ;Jig of Slurs , wasn't that a Eurovision composition the same year as Boom Bang a Bang ?
geoffmca just beat me to it there! Trip to Durrow is a beautiful, lyrical tune. I'm sure Mozart would have made much of it. We have nicknames for some of our tunes, the sometimes- uncomplimentary nature of which does not reflect the affection for the tunes. Jig of Slurs is always Jar of Slugs to us. Tarbolton becomes Taliban, Flop-eared Mule is Wonky Donkey and we all know about Sheebeg... We have a set of three jigs called the Downhill Set because it finishes with The Kesh.
Shores of Lough Gowna is another beauty.

I got out an old Clannad LP recently, so now The Galtee Hunt keeps playing in my head and I walk the halls at work whistling it. So I guess that’s my current favorite. Ask me again tomorrow.
A bunch of my favorites (though I don't play them all yet):
Sean sa Cheo
Trip to Durrow
Broken Pledge
Collier's (reel)
Drunken Sailor (hornpipe)
Kit O'Mahoney's (hornpipe)
John Naughton's version of Old Man Dillon
John Naughton's version of Ship in Full Sail

Reel With The Birl
John Brennan's
Garrett Barry's (jig) (Paddy Canny's version)
Music In The Glen
The Old Bush
Bird In The Bush
Kitty's Gone A-Milking
and on and on and on...
The John Bowe's and Drowsy Maggie in A with Cooley's third part set -- from Liz Carrol's very first recording "A Friend Indeed."
To my ear, the Drowsy Maggie in A with the third part is the most brilliant work of fiddle playing I think I've ever heard by a solo fiddle player -- because of the way Liz Carroll works the tune around and gives perhaps the PERFECT, delectable variations, both melodically and rhythmically, on each part of the tune. I have never been able to "get over" the brilliance of this musical achievement.,,,and I don't think I ever will hear anything in IrTrad that to me excels as much.
