In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Hi,
Sorry for my english!! I'm french!!
My husband will take me in Dublin for my 30's!!!
I play fiddle, I teach also!! I m in love with irish music!!
We went to Killarney 8 years ago and I remember it was very difficult to find good irish music ( a tourist place everywhere!! )but finally we did found a little pub with an old fiddler and a young man with flute and magical voice!!! That was great
So we wil have 3 nights in Dublin:
9, 10, 11 may 2008, at the sheldon park hotel,
I m looking for good place to hear irish sessions, i will not have my fiddle with me (SNIFF) and no car (bus, Luas only possible)
If you are from dublin, please just say me where to go to have a good time earing irsh music!!
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
The LUAS line will take you directly from near your hotel (which is several miles out of town) to the Smithfield stop, from which you can head up the street to The Cobblestone, or to the Four Courts stop which is almost directly opposite Hughes's pub.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
LOL!!
I would like!! But this is not possible!!
Cobblestones seams to be a good place but in wich moment of the day can i hear music ther??
Do you know o Donoghes?? This is not written corectly sorry!!
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
O'Donoghue's is not a bad choice if you've only got a few days and are using public transport. Music in the evenings, and Friday lunchtime (I think). It's also in a better part of the city than Cobblestones and Hughes. You could also check out The Palace on Fleet Street. I think The Duke on Duke Street has a session on Sunday evenings.
Cobblestones and Hughes are not in the best parts of the city centre, so keep your wits about you if you visit at night or else get a taxi from O'Connell Street there and back. It's safe enough during the daytime.
Don't bother with the Temple Bar area - very touristy and mainly paid performances for said tourists.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
'Cobblestones and Hughes are not in the best parts of the city centre, so keep your wits about you if you visit at night'
This is utter Southside bollix!
It's probably safer to walk up Smithfield from the LUAS stop to The Cobblestone (not 'Cobblestones') or to cross the road from the LUAS stop opposite Hughes's than to risk a night-time journey to Merrion Row.
Marilann, The Cobblestone has sessions every night and an early one on Sundays as well. Hughes's also has sessions Friday-Sun nights.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
There's something on most nights in Hughes's as well, MacCruiskeen.
And, I must admit, I wander around Smithfield at all hours of the day and night when I'm in Dublin and never think anything of it. The only spot of bother I ever had in Dublin was by the Four Courts, but that was on the side next to the Liffey, not the Smithfield side, and in any case was sorted by a well-aimed snarl.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
The Cobblestone is great music, but you may find it difficult to get anywhere near where the music is played. When I visited, it was in an alcove towards the front out of hearing and viewing range of most of the pub. - Is that always the case?
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Well, I've never had a problem maintaining a space at The Cobblestone's bar. In fact, I've never had a problem maintaining a space at any bar in Ireland. That could be because I'm 6'6" tall and stink of rancid barnacles (fortunately, neither is the case) or just that if someone nicks my spot I politely point out that I was either leaning, sitting or sprawling there. Nobody has yet resisted these overtures.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Well, I'll be there later this week, MacCruiskeen, so I'll let you know. I was there for a week last February (and the Febraury before) and I ended up in Hughes's every night, I think. Mind you, I might not have exactly known where I was by the end of the night.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
I'm studying in Dublin right now for 6 months, and have been desperate to get to some good music, but have been advised (as a smallish female probably going alone) not to venture into Smithfield after dark. Unfortunately, most of the sessions and ceilis I'm interested in seem to be there or off O'Connell; are taxies my only option (student budget...)?
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
I think Smithfield is fine if you go by cab -- you just don't want to walk at night. I was approached by a dodgy homeless guy who was looking to empty my pockets one night, but when he got up next to me he had to crane his neck to look up at me. (I look like a tame grizzly bear... sort of.) He changed his mind, but he called me a Yankee C#@!*t before storming off.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
"This is utter Southside bollix!"
Really? I'm a Northsider and no stranger to some of the rougher parts of the city. The lady, however, is a tourist who probably doesn't know the city very well, and she probably can't handle gurriers and junkies as capably as some of the hard men on this forum...
Despite the redevelopment attempts, Smithfield can be dog rough at night, especially during the first weekend of each month. Better that tourists are aware of this than to send them into a kip of an area without warning.
"It's probably safer to walk up Smithfield from the LUAS stop to The Cobblestone .... than to risk a night-time journey to Merrion Row."
Utter cr@p and very unhelpful disinformation to give to a visitor.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Niallt, please read the poster's original query.
1) she's not going to be there during the first weekend of any month;
2) she'll be with her husband;
3) The Palace does not usually have sessions at weekends.
I've been accosted more times on Merrion Row and Baggot Street (and the whole Grafton Street area) than ever when walking up Church Street, Chancery Street, Queen Street and Smithfield combined.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
MacCruiskeen - I did read the original query. My subsequent post was in response to later parts of the thread.
1. My comment re the area being worse during the weekend of the horse fair applies to other readers who might visit the area at other times.
2. Gender of tourists doesn't really make much difference to the fact that the area can be intimidating in the evenings.
3. Merrion Row is between the Shelbourne Hotel and Government buildings/Dail Eireann and isn't really "Grafton Street area". You must have bad luck, though, in being accosted more often in one of the more prestigious and heavily policed parts of town than in what is generally considered to be one of the more deprived parts of the city.
Your experience and advice is at odds with my personal experience and that of any Dubs that I know.
Marion - have a great trip to Dublin, take a cab to The Cobblestone and don't take guff from any culchie at the bar that starts giving you grief about invading his space.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Niallt,
Well, if you read that original posting you certainly didn't show it. If you'd have done so, you'd appreciate that the poster will be staying in a hotel out on the Naas road. Doesn't it make a little bit more sense to suggest a LUAS journey to within easy reach of two of the city's best session pubs rather a journey to the centre then a long walk to bars on the Southside (via Grafton Street)? Fine, they might get a taxi to Merrion Row, but on the way back? Forget it.
You might be a Dub, but I see that you actually live in Andalucia. I think I might know more about current Dublin street life than you do!
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
MacCruiskeen, I stand by my earlier advice. The visitors can get into town however they like. Once in the city centre, my advice is that they can either get a cab to The Cobblestone (c. €6) or wander up to O'Donoghue's (via Dublin's premier retail street, notwithstanding the fact that you seem to get a uniquely disproportionate amount of street hassle here).
Or they could follow your advice, save €12, and possibly enjoy the pleasures of the Bridewell, the Mater and the French Embassy.
Try to keep your comments on-topic, bud. This isn't a p1ssing contest to see who knows the most about the back streets of Dublin, but merely an attempt to help some overseas visitors have a good time when they visit the city.
"You might be a Dub, but I see that you actually live in Andalucia. I think I might know more about current Dublin street life than you do!"
- Why, because you live in Leitrim, of all places?! Coming up to Croker for the match or to do the big shop on December 8th does not, I'm afraid, make you an authority on the city. You know nothing of how much time I spend in, or how frequently I visit Dublin. My profile says that I am based *mostly* in Andalucia.
You strike me as a last word freak, so in a gesture of conciliation, I'll leave the last word to you.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
Well not to put you off going to the Cobblestones but generally it is very hard to get a seat if you want to play, unless you get there early, even if you do want to play some of the people who play there aren't exactly very welcoming (note I said 'some' not 'all') and if you want to listen it's normally only possible to hear it if you are right up beside the session. On a busy night this can be difficult. If its possible for a pub to have an inflated ego about itself the Cobblestones has one, it's not half as good as it thinks it is!
It can be a dodgy area too, if you don't believe me then ask my friend who one night after leaving a gig there was confronted by a guy with a syringe, next thing he knew he woke up on the side of the road and was passing blood when going to the toilet, luckily he's ok now but he could've been killed in this situation. So if you do decide to try the Cobblestones be warned that it's in a dodgy area.
I've found Hughes' friendlier and much more accessible. It's right on the LUAS line too so you're less likely to meet trouble.
As others have pointed out though to hear 'real Irish trad music' you really have to get out of the city and find a good session in a quiet country pub with little or no tourists.
Re: In Dublin in may, where to hear real irish tradmusic???
If you hire a bike, it's a lovely ride up to Howth and around the headland. Wimps will tell you the hill is steep, but it's only a couple of miles up the hill at Howth so it's really not a problem. Beuatiful in any weather.

On the 2nd of Feb your personal page bore the statement 'suspended until 6th Feb'. That makes four days in my book, so you've probably just crept back in early.

No, there isn't Ben. Hughes's can be very quiet mid-week at this time of year.
Grego, the music at The Cobblestone always takes place beside the front window. The best place to view/listen is at the bar itself.

Yes, MacCruiskeen that's what I found. However, the bar is prize territory! You need to get there early and have a strong bladder...
