Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

What is the whistle Liam O'Flynn is playing on RTE's "The Full Set" Programme 1(about 18 minutes from the beginning)?
Is it a heavily tweaked (and dinged!) Generation or has the red mouthpiece confused me?

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Haven't seen the programme, but your description sounds like one of Willie Clancy's old Generations...

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

I have not found the clip you are watching yet.
I did find an image & zoomed in;
http://www.rte.ie/tv/thefullset/images/ep1b.jpg
It looks like a generation fipple with a pvc lavatory nut & a really nice brass body.
Cool!

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

I think the "lavatory nut" may be gaffa (duct) tape.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

That is the color for sure. I let my imagination get carried away on plumbing parts. Is it something Willie Clancy made?

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Finally got the clip loaded. The bottom 'foot' on his whistle has a hole (uncovered) for the pinkie.
Low D rolls?

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

I can't tell from that, but I doubt he'd have drilled one of Clancy's, which weren't drilled. Interesting though the possibility, I can't see an extra hole... :-/

Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Blast you ceolachan I have a dickens of a time loading RTÉ with the Real Player & all. But it gets better ~ or I get better; each time. Now I don't
know anything abut Mr. Clancy's whistles. But if he used some gaffa tape he was ahead of his time. There is a nice black one I like. The tune should be here;
http://www.rte.ie/tv/thefullset/av_20070615.html
Liam plays is "The Emigrant's Farewell" & it is poignant yes. The whistle is very nice.
By way of description:
The fippled one has the top hole . . . (drilled) through an upper coupling. . There is a lower pipe couplng which is seen from time to time. The 7th hole should be visible toward the end of the tune. My timer places it directly after a closeup of Frankie Glackin as the camera pans away. Between ~ 19' 30" - 19" 43' I see a hole. You may not see a hole. Sigh! We are beyond consulting young Willie. The whistle looks as though it has seen better days. With Mr. O'Flynn's playing
She shines!

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Thanks for the link Muse, now you have the knowledge the world is your oyster... I was just being plain lazy... ;-)

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Yes Muse has a good description of that strange whistle above.
Seems to me that that extra hole down there on that soldered-on footjoint is too low to be fingered, but instead might be a resonance hole as is found on many Irish flutes.
In addition to that hole there just might be a hole under Liam's little finger, a 7th hole proper.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

By the way I'd love to learn one of the jigs in their opening set, the one that bar 8 goes:
ABC# d2
I'm going to do a search here and see what I find.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Huh? ~ I just played that clip, in 'Theater Mode', big screen, and there was no whistle to be seen anywhere...and that ain't Frankie Gavin ~ but I loved the music... Damn, we're all, belly and jowel, getting old though, sigh... ;-)

So, where is the clip with this whistle?

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

It's Paddy Glackin playing with Liam there.
Anyhow I searched using several fragments of the jig they played and came up empty.
I think it starts:
jig D mixolydian
DEG CAA | dCd efg |
the second part starts
dfa dfa | dfa afd | Ceg Ceg | Ceg geC |
I could be wrong, I haven't tried actually playing along, these are just impressions gained from watching Liam's fingers.

Liam on whistle ~ 16:45 ~ air: The Emigrant's Farewell ~ 19:45

Nope!, I've never seen one like that, well described Muse. It appears to be a C foot extension, the open hole is the D, closed giving C natural, I would guess...

# Posted on February 1st 2008 by ceolachan

Several makers have made 7 and 8 hole whistles but I have yet to have one in hand...

Richard, that's an old standard and I'm sure it is here, but it may take my brain cells awhile to come up with the specifics... The seed is planted...

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

"Domhnall Na Graine" was the first tune of the first set that starts the actual program, with some slight differences to JACKB's transcription...

"Kitty's Rambles" fits the bits you've offered up, and the key signature...

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Yes it's Kitty's Rambles, thanks!
My searches didn't turn it up, because Liam and Paddy are playing a version different enough so that the bits I used to search don't occur in the "session" version.
I like their version's last bit, the ABC# d2, which is different than the "session" version.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

This seems to be a very special whistle. It is tuned in C and is much longer than the normal C whistles and has a hole for its base note C a bit like most flutes have. It's soldered together from brass tubing and the head seems to be an improved Generation head. I love the sound of this whistle and it's in the hand of a real master.

Liam O'Flynn & Paddy Glackin

Thanks deeor I have not watched the RTÉ in some months.
It was worth the effort to hear & see these fine musicians. Thanks Liam & my apologies to Paddy Glackin for confusing his name.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

No strong leads yet. What were the Willy Clancy special Generations? Could it be one of those which Liam has tweaked further? I suppose I should really take this query to Chiff and Fipple.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Found out that this was discussed some time ago on Chiff & Fipple. http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?p=678408&highlight=liam+oflynn+whistle#678408

Hope the link works.

Re: Liam O'Flynn's whistle?

Can anybody make out the name of the air that Glackin plays?
