Snuffy Smith Bridges, Follow up report for short scale banjo players
Snuffy Smith Bridges, Follow up report for short scale banjo players
This is a follow-up to my earlier thread regarding 17 vs. 19 fret banjos. My new Snuffy Smith bridge came today and the improvement is immediately noticeable. Before I continue, I would be remiss without thanking Reverend and Mike Keyes for their useful posts in the past regarding this issue.
The bridge (coupled with a wee bit of head tightening) improved volume, tone and intonation dramatically. I couldn't be more pleased. (I have a basic Gold Tone IT-250 with heavy gage strings). For those of you who can't afford a big jump to an expensive banjo, (like me) a good bridge can make a world of difference with even the most humble of banjos. As Mike Keyes and Reverend have preached for a while, a good set-up and some quality time experimenting really does make a big difference.

Why does everyone have to make me out as "preaching"... Oh wait... never mind
Glad it made a difference! Setup is key! What kind of head does it have on it? Is it the usual Gold Tone smooth, opaque plastic head? Did you tighten the head to raise the action because the bridge is shorter?
BTW, I put a Gold Tone pre-mounted calfskin head on my Ome, and it sounds great!

I also play a Gold Tone IT-250 and actually like it quite a bit. I think the neck is great. I wouldn't mind experimenting with another bridge though. Is there a particular Snuffy Smith model for this bridge or is there just one for tenor banjos?

Yep, It's the standard Remo weather king head - I tweaked it up a crank just to give it a bit crisper tone. Keep on preaching Reverend...

The Snuffy Smith bridges come in different heights. Measure what you've got on there now, and then order from that.
