hi,
i would like to know if it is worth subscribing to RTE and TG4 only for the music?
Are there many regular programs of irish traditionnal music?
thanks
"Come west along the road" is not available for free though, so if it's clip from the past you wan't you might subscribe RTE. But there is a series likes this for free at tg4 aswell (with old clips) called "Siar an bothar"

Siar = towards the West
An Bothar = the Road
In other words: TG4 recycles old series of Come West along the road.
Just curious, but are you interested in subscribing for the visual of seeing people play and the dialogue that they have, or are you just interested in another place to listen to ITM?
If I may offer a suggestion for a free place to listen to decent ITM, you could try downloading AOL Radio, which has access to XM stations, which includes the Celtic station, which I've found to have a decent selection of music.
AOL Radio is free with a screen name and password from AOL or AIM.
=)
Good luck in your search!!
"Siar an bothar" ought to be translated as "Back along the Road", this is the connotation. Though 'siar' also means 'in a westerly direction', here it means 'back'. It's a superb programme that frequently features music worth listening to.
TG4 also makes the best documentaries in Ireland or Britain; remember when BBC documentaries had actual content? They still do on TG4!
Through the week, there might be one or two programmes on TG4 which, while not about Irish traditional music solely, the regularly include it. Cultural programmes about old ways of life and history of Irish areas etc regularly feature Irish music in some form.
If visual is not essential, RnaG and RTE Radio have a lot of traditional music programmes. www.liveireland.com is also a free internet radio stream which is just Irish music, but there is an unfortunate emphasis on contemporary singers, in my opinion.

Re: ITM on irish TV channels
Depends on how much it costs to subscribe.
I hate to say it, but Radio Telefis Éireann (RTE) and TG4 dont have enough programs dedicated to ITM to make a subscription worthwhile.

Re: ITM on irish TV channels
The only thing I will say in favour of RTE and TG4 is that Come West along the Road and Geantraí are great programs.

Re: ITM on irish TV channels
Most of the TG4 programmes with trad music are available for free at the web in the music archive (ceol-cartlann).
http://www.tg4.ie/Webt/webt.htm
When it comes to RTE many trad programmes are available for free there aswell like these two series:
"The full set"
http://www.rte.ie/tv/thefullset/index.html
"The raw bar remix" http://www.rte.ie/tv/therawbarremix/index.html
"Come west along the road" is not available for free though, so if it's clip from the past you wan't you might subscribe RTE. But there is a series likes this for free at tg4 aswell (with old clips) called "Siar an bothar"
