Tenuous link...

I've just got hold of Vieux Farka Toure's album. Fantastic and not remotely Irish/British traditional (he's from Mali) but there are definite echoes of our traditions in the singing style and the rhythms are mesmerising.

Re: Tenuous link...

Great stuff, Vieux is the son of the late, great Ali Farka Toure, a legend of Malian music. Distinct traces of our tradition in the style of singing but, then again, I think that music worldwide evolved from the Mali desert and it might be fair to say that there are traces of their music in ours. Another band from Mali that you might want to check out is Tinariwen, seen them live last year and they were stunning as is their album Aman Iman.

You can listen to him here http://www.myspace.com/bassekoukouyate
Excellent stuff. Beware of paying too much attention to amazon recommendations, they're basically trying to coax you to buy something. Listen first, if possible.

Of course you're right. Thanks for the link - lovely stuff - a blast of hot, intense sunshine into a dark north-western evening.
