Does anyone know of some decent pipe makers, who have waiting lists under two years? Or just a big list of a bunch of pipe makers would be nice as well. Every pipe maker i look at has huge waiting lists when it comes to regs, or dont even make them anymore. I was looking into Mickey Dunne, and im concedering it, but i'd really like to get some regs. Is there any way i can have anouther maker make regs for one of his sets?
thanks a bunch, and sorry for any stupid questions.
On the links page of www.uilleannobsession.com theres a big list of pipemakers websites. Theres a list of makers too on www.pipers.ie
The only makers I can think of off hand that have would be newer makers like CJ Dixon www.cjdixon.com or Tim Benson www.myspace.com/timbenson. Jim Wenham in Tipperary makes great stuff too. I think his details are on the NPU website.
You can put regulators made by some one else on to a half set made by Mickey Dunne but talk to Mickey first.
He may recommend a maker to do this if he's not set up to do regulators himself.
Normally the waiting list says a lot about the maker, if it is under wo years, I would have to check out his workshop and how he makes them and whether he's professionally active or just churning out some second-class stuff!
I don't know of one pipemaker who isn't under 2 years
If you want a decent set in less than two years, you should look at the classifieds on uilleannobsession.com and also keep an eye on the uilleann pipe forum at chiffandfipple.com. People often post adverts for sets there.
It's pretty common to have mix-and-match pipes, with regs by a different maker.
Joe McKenna used to play a set on which two of the regs were by one maker, the third reg by another.
As long as you can get the volume to balance you should be OK. What I mean is that some makers have their pipes set up so as to play hard reeds, some easy. So if you have drones and chanter designed to be reeded easy, and get regs designed to be reeded hard, you may have some trouble balancing everything.
Perhaps it's only the reeds that are different, not the pipes themselves. But I suspect that a maker that always reeds his pipes to play at a high pressure might be using a design which is difficult to reed to play at a low pressure, and visa versa.
Anyhow CJ Dixon only has a one-year wait.
There's a pipe maker in Malahide, Co. Dublin that has a relatively short waiting list (max 1 year i think).. Kevin Thompson's his name. My mate had a starter set made by him and they sound good to me (although na piobairi uileann changed the reed on the set as soon as my friend got in the door almost).
Kevin Thompson is one of the best makers in the world. His instruments are top class and played by the finest pipers out there.
You can hear his work here
www.tompipes.com
I don't mean to plug my site but you can hear Thompson's work there.

Re: Pipe Waiting lists
I believe Brad Angus will make regs, but his waiting list has to be greater than 2 years. Do you have a half set now that you want to add regs?
You want to sell you half set and get a full set, as Mr Spear suggests.
