2 buttons, 1 finger...

2 buttons, 1 finger...

(B/C box oriented question) I have found that some people believe that one shouldn't use the same finger for 2 different buttons in a row and some think it is OK. I don't really know what I think but I would tend to believe a tune will sound crisper if one doesn't do the action just described. So, this is how I try to finger my tunes. But what about when you switch the bellow direction? Would this be considered good or bad by those of you who don't slide?

(change of subject...) Can any of you do a roll with you wring pinkie and middle fingers? I am having a hell of time with it no matter how hard I work on it...

Re: 2 buttons, 1 finger...

Sliding is unavoidable in many tunes. I was told to use an inside finger (middle or ring) for sliding and to develop that finger really well at it. I'm not the greatest player, but I do find it "crisper" sliding with my middle finger than the others. If you can plan your fingering out ahead of time, then you should never have to slide with the index or pinky.

Yeah you can roll with the ring, pinky and middle. What I still find near impossible though is rolling inside-out starting on the outer row.

Re: 2 buttons, 1 finger...

No problems with sliding, mainly because my Mengascini has such nice big, smooth buttons which don't disappear inside the keyboard when depressed.

I also find rolls easy, but then I played ITM on the piano for quite a few years before I picked up the box. Plus I use my pinkie probably more than the experts recommend for the same reason, so it's had plenty of strengthening exercise.

Re: 2 buttons, 1 finger...

Sliding is ok its a question of planning where the slide comes. I slide best with !st or 2nd finger. It depends how many notes up or down follow the slide.

As I dont use little finger, I can't answer Q2.

Re: 2 buttons, 1 finger...

I slide. I find that it also helps when doing finger substitutions.

There was another thread here on the use of the pinky a week or so ago. I use it for everything including rolls. Its just that some don't get the pinky trained to do things. My teacher uses it alot for grace notes so the finger gets used alot.

The rolls come easier when the pinky and ring get worked independently and regularly.

With my Technique I should be preaching! ;-)
