I woke up with this reel a few weeks ago and though i seemed to have a pretty good grip on the tune, i couldn't identify it or find a recording in my collection. with apologies for my homegrown abc system, it begins like this:
d,fad,edcdbca,(a)bagbadfabagfe, (1st d is the open string, and going up to e, then stairstepping down..)
a knowlegeable friend has identified it as 'John Brennan's', but it doesn't match that tune on this site. it's in D, and it's a cheerful, notey tune. thanks for any help.
| DFAd edcd | ~ You need to get your ABCs somewhat right before anyone can help you. First, groupings into 4's, suspecting that's what you are on about, a 'reel'. Then the letters to the notes. Here they are, starting with the open G, and then D ~ etc...
G, A, B, C ~ D E F G ~ A B c d ~ e f g a b c' d' ~
Here is my start again on your notes and some idea of at least the groupings ~ and it is quite likely that the 5th and 6th bar will be the same or similar to bars 1 & 2 ~ (d, is D ~ and by a, do you mean A) ~
DFAd edcd | bcAb agba | dfab agfe | ~ ~ |
DFAd edcd | bcAb agba |
Correct your notes and get back to us on it. I can't promise anything but at least you will have started to get to grips with ABC notation...
If you want something smaller, well, you can add a forward slash after the note ~ D/D/ = D, the equal signs are as to time value. Here's more madness, a bar full of 1/16th notes or D/ and other lengths ~
thanks all -- i'll process this, and maybe eventually learn my proper abcs. i developed my own notation, just for purposes of recall, years back, and am loath to abandon it now, in my waning years....
i did listen to john carty's track, and it's not even close to that tune. not even for john carty. ;~)
i can see i have some work to do. many thanks though!

Re: ID this reel?
I think it's John Brennan's (though the version printed in the Tunes database is rather different from the one I know).

Re: ID this reel?
Maybe it's this one that was posted in the "John Brennan's" comments. Try pasting the file in the Cnet convterer, "tinamatt.

Re: ID this reel?
I've just realized that I think you've left the question of length completely ungiven... So, I'll have to look at this again ~
D2 FA d2 ed | cdBc A bagbadfabagfe ~ ~ |
As said, you could help yourself and make it easier on us by learning the basics of ABCs ~

Like Nicholas, I suspect it is some version of "Brennan's Fancy" ~

Re: ID this reel?
More ABC stuff, the headers ~
X:
T: ~ 'title' / 'name'
M: 4/4 ~ time signature
L: 1/8 ~ value
R: reel ~ tune form
So, with M: 4/4 and L: 1/8, every single letter is worth 1/8 th of the bar, making a full bar ~ | DFAd edcd | ~
By using numbers we increase the value of a letter ~
D2 = DD
D3 = DDD
D4 = DDDD
Here's a few bars full of Ds ~
~ | DDDD DDDD | ~ | D2 D2 D2 D2 | ~ | D3 D D3 D | ~ | D4 D4 | ~
If you want something smaller, well, you can add a forward slash after the note ~ D/D/ = D, the equal signs are as to time value. Here's more madness, a bar full of 1/16th notes or D/ and other lengths ~
~ | D2 DD/D/ DD D/D/D/D/ | ~

All the above are 4/4, 4 1/4 beats to a bar ~ | A2 A2 A2 A2 |
