Looking for Bodhran

Looking for Bodhran

Hi folks,
it's been eons. I've been taking bodhran lessons (make your jokes if you'd like haha) and would like to upgrade. I can't afford the makers' prices on new ones, so i thought i'd put out a feeler on any used ones. I'm looking for tunable, maybe 14" (?) diameter and fairly deep. I'd appreciate any leads.

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Hi cdavick! A question... where you can from? Are you in Europe?
A friend of mine (a very good bodhran player) is very happy with a little bodhran make from Hedwitschak http://www.bodhranmaker.de/new/index.php?Bodhrans:Light_Line_Deep
Hedwitschak makes another type http://www.bodhranmaker.de/new/index.php?Bodhrans:BasicLine_%2Anew%2A

Re: Looking for Bodhran

go for metloef.com great bodhrans
I have mine for 2 years and still can't believe how great it is
that's US
in Europe
www.eckermanndrums.com
very nice 14" drums
I've played Hedwischak Rolf Wagels Edition these drums are made to be the equivalent of Seamus O'Kane's bodhrans but Christian has to learn few things about curing the skin cause the sound of it is a little bit flat
at least that's my opinion

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Thanks everyone. I'm in Chicago, so shipping fees may be an issue... but i'll check these out. I'm aware of Mike Quinlan here who makes great drums, but like i said, i need something a little easier on the pocket. Any other suggestions are welcome too.

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Yep, get a good one, or a really cheap one that you can throw away when you get a good one.

Re: Looking for Bodhran

"bodhran lessons"?

Bloody hell, my imagination fails me. I just can't for the life of me imagine what you "teacher" could possible doing. (other than persuading you to part with dosh)

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Must agree again with Mr Llig, there is only one lesson required. Drums in the USA are a scandalous price, should be on the candidates manifesto for the election. I have never seen a drum better than my own, nowadays about £130, $260.

Re: Looking for Bodhran

If I could spell sycophantic Jig I would be tempted to use it, Jig......

Actually I am flattered, although I do believe bodhrans are vastly over priced in the USA. I remember talking to Eamon Maguire and he mentioned an American who was trying to make drums, and had come to Eamon for advice. Mr Maguire was most disparaging about this man's abilities until I pointed out he was selling drums at something like 6 or 7 hundred dollars. I realised Eamon was thinking "I could have dug the arm into Bill Clinton and George Mitchell" but fortunately Eamon is content with his lot, and does not wish to commit fully to the capitalist dream.

If a Maguire drum is good enough for those two, it can be recommended for anyone. And Bill is a musician.....

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I did contact the maker here in Chicago. His name's Mike Quinlan ( qdrums.com ) and he offers a single-head drum for $250. That may be what I go with. Here's how I heard of him: my bodhran teacher (he teaches at a school where I get almost free lessons!) said one guy from his class some years ago looked at the teacher's drum (Brendan White, I think) and went and made himself one. That was Mike Quinlan, and he kept making them and gave one to the teacher. When the teacher went to Ireland to buy a "dream" bodhran from a maker there (can't remember who), he said the maker gave his drum a try, said "well, i figure I can't make you one better than this one" and refused to make him one. That's the first hand story anyway. Point being that I guess Quinlan's drums are pretty nice. Since I'm in the same town, won't have shipping fees or exchange rates (dollar's horrible right now!!) this is probably the best option for me.....

I really appreciate you all answering - Padre and Mcknowall got me to think it's probably best, indeed, to save for a good one.

As for what you'd learn in bodhran lessons, haven't you ever met anyone in a session with a drum that you wished would go take lessons? What about the didgeridoo player? :-) Have at it.

blessings all,
colleen

Re: Looking for Bodhran

Thank you John.

And Tombo, Bill Clinton was not with me, I have my reputation to think of, he was with Eamon.
