Second-Let me introduce myself as one of the new Sessioneers.
My Name is James (I thought Seamus sounded a bit more appropriate) and I have decided to try and learn the Whistle for the 3rd time. With me working 8-5 again, I have the time.
My exposure to Irish/Celtic music is limited to what I hear on "Thistle and Shamrock", but I also have a library card. But I'm also a fan of almost all music.
I must be fairly creative as I can write poetry and take pictures. I also can do a bit of web development (I plan on re-learning that) and study Aikido.
So that's me--I hope to find lots of tunes to play and maybe down the road some sessions, etc in Harrisburg, PA.
We don't have the joy of 'Thistle and Shamrock', so am not sure what is on it. Is it an updated White Heather Club? Or something a bit more with it......
We could do with that type of radio station in this neck of the woods, instead of the wall to wall Country and Irish programs that seem to dominate our local station.
(There ya go...the first moan of 2008)
I would recommend you check out www.clarefm.ie. They have 4 weekly ITM shows, that you can either listen to or register for podcasts. Click on the fiddle on the home page and you're there.
Also, we have an "Ireland in America: show that is live every Monday morning at 8:00CST from St Louis, MO. Bernie McDonald does a great job. They archive the last two week's of each show, so you can listen whenever you want. Here's the link...
Anyone know anything about the archived ITM programmes on clarefm? I tried their website and when you go to the links there is a blank page (or virtually). I've heard the kitchen session stuff, just wondered if there was anything else.
Thistle and Shamrock is an excellent program of traditional Celtic (if you will) music produced by Fiona Ritchie out of South Carolina Public Radio. Longest running music show on NPR..probably why we don't get it in the vast wasteland of Radio in Chicago....All we get is the droning of "This American Life" and the "Annoying Music Program".
It used to play here and is magnificent. Heavy on the Scottish Highland.

So much of playing the music is all about listening, and these sites should give you plenty of opportunities to do just that.
Happy New Year!

Re: New Year--New Whistler
It usually works for me, looks like part of the site is down at the moment.
The archive is the last weeks trad programmes in mp3 format, there's usually about 7 programmes to download.
Give them a while to fix it, and try again

zippy:
Seems odd that a place like Chicago wouldn't have that program.
Now I need to go a practice the whistle a bit;)
