Not intended as a trick question. I love this tune, and seldom get a chance to fit it into the session as a "change". It does not go unappreciated, but generally surprises those who should be more knowledgeable. One should admit it doesn't fit the generic format of iTrad, but contrarily stimulates the thought process to a higher... if you know wha I mean: "plain". I really am trying not to be etheral, but, "I love this tune" .

I enjoy playing the heathery breeze - It's well suited to the banjo. I am confused as to why anyone would think it, or any trad tune would be unusual to start a session. Perhaps, I am misunderstanding the purpose of this thread?
Which technical bits lazy? seems to fall under the fingers right enough.... great tune for some chords .
Delighted to hear the name mentioned though, thanks. One of those tunes I forgot I knew.
I seem to think it might somehow have a third part, anyone?
Jig, it's in bars 2 and 6, with the C-nat on the A and the F# on the D played next to each other, both with the 2nd finger, which I need to do with my thickish fingers. Needs a bit of slow careful practice to play it cleanly. Of course, one can always “cheat” by shifting up to the 2nd position with the 1st finger on the C-nat and the 2nd on the F#, which is a useful little exercise in its own right anyway. And then there are the string cross-overs which everyone needs to do some work on at some stage in their playing.
Whatever. That's just fiddle player stuff. And many tunes have got little extra twiddly bits and beats, so they're all non-generic? Still doesn't mean you can't kick off a session on it (leathery kneeze that is).
Ah ok, I had'nt realised I was cheating It never Occured to me to finger it another way! Hmm, doing it like you mention is damn tricky enough! I will keep at it.
I have recently been converted to the 5 string Viola,I just like the extra space.I have a 15.5" and its allmost the same as my mandolin which is about 15. 3". Gonna sell me old german fiddle, with a dark rich tone and get a 'nice' Viola[5 string] Decided.
Perhaps ,with your thick fingers you might consider the same idea?
Jig, I know a professional orchestral violinist who now prefers, as he gets older, to play viola in the orchestra for exactly that reason. However, his fingers are significantly thicker than mine, so I can see the point. I don't think I need to go down that road quite just yet.
"Kicking Off " a session.
"Kicking Off " a session.
When was the last time you heard "Heather Breeze" as a "kick-off" for your session?

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
Our fluter plays and likes that tune, so it happens now and then.
Unless this is some sort of trick question....

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
I'm confused. Are we talking about this Heathery Breeze: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/411 ?
Can't see why it doesn't fit the Irish trad format. Perfectly sensible Scots reel borrowed and Irish-ized, a la Matt Molloy and others.
And yes, it's a lovely tune.

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
Ah, that's the one with a bit of useful technical work for the fiddlers!

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
what diffrence does it make what tune starts the session?

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
We always start the session with the first tune.
At the end, we often play the last tune.

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
And in the middle, we usually play the in-between tunes.
This makes for harmonious well-being and an enormous duck-billed platitude.

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
Max, Stop being so facetious. You know there is no such harmonica tune as the Duck-Billed Platitude. It is usually played on the shakey egg.

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
I have to say I cant figure out why it might not be 'generic'? Explanation ? This is not a trick question...

Re: "Kicking Off " a session.
Because it's as tight as a duck-billed platitude's arse.
....oh, sorry, I thought you said generous......
