Re: Burke low g whistle on ebay.

I have aluminum Burkes in high D, high C, low A, low G, and low D and they are all very nice whistles.
I tried a large number of different makes of low D and the Burke low D (which he calls "pro viper" for some reason) is still my favourite.
A great thing about the Burkes is that all the various sizes seem to play exactly alike so that you can switch back and forth without having to think about it or having to adapt to each size whistle.
So this low G will be a very good player.
If I had the money I would have Burkes in every key.

Re: Burke low g whistle on ebay.

On the Burke low whistles, do they require the piper grip or is the hole pattern amenable to whistle fingering?

I have a Howard Low D. It has been a bit frustrating since I am a bit focused on learning box and have less time to devote to whistle, so I am somewhat a casual player and struggle with the technique of the pipers grip.

Re: Burke low g whistle on ebay.

All low D whistles are going to have pretty much the same fingerhole spacing, because the placement of the holes is dictated by the laws of acoustics. Or more accurately, the placement of the holes represents a compromise between the ideal hole positions (according to the laws of acoustics) and the size of normal people's hands.
The hole which is always furthest from its acoustically correct position is the hole from which E emits, closed by the ring finger of the lower hand. Ideally this hole should be as large as the F sharp hole and placed halfway between the F sharp hole and the open end of the whistle. If so placed the low E would be as strong and stable as the bottom D and low F sharp. However few people could play such a whistle. So, the E hole is moved further up the tube (away from the open end and closer to the F sharp hole) which makes the E too sharp, and to compensate for this sharpness the diameter of the E hole must be reduced. This E hole which is too high on the tube and too small results in a low E which is the weakest note on the entire instrument., the Achilles Heel of low D whistles.
Susato makes low whistles with keys on them so that anyone can comfortably finger them. The keys allow all the holes to be put in their acoustically correct positions.
Low G whistles however are not really big enough for this stuff to be an issue. But, I use the "piper's grip" on all sizes of whistle I play including high D ones.

Re: Burke low g whistle on ebay.

thanks

I appreciate the engineering explanation since it lets me know that some of the difficulties may not be strictly my technique....

On the other hand, I suppose it also suggests I need to play more if time, Herself, and the kids visiting for the holidays will allow.

Had a riot on youngest daughter's first morning...."You actually practice at 5AM!!!!!!!!!! Some of us sleep!!!!!!!!" Even tried in the boiler room. She must be descended from the princess who was bothered by peas under the mattress...
