I have not been around these parts in a long while! Its refreshing to look at the discussions and tunes!
I have a question, however, to all you pipers out there.
I have a Seth Gallagher 3/4 set made in nickel and brass. I've had them since around 2005. I was wondering if any of you could give me a round about price on what you think they might be worth if I sold them today.
Would they be worth more than what Seth has them on his website? His wait list is now 4 years, so do you think that since the time to get a 3/4 set is so long it might up the value if they were to be sold today?
I suppose I should say, Im just wondering if the pipes are worth more today than what I payed for them (around 7000).
Possible. If you advertised them for a higher price and they sold. They were, if not, they weren't.
An object is valued by what people will pay for it.
More than that I couldnt say.......
The set is in nickel and brass? Since I can't imagine an all-metal set (well actually I can imagine one since I've seen Taylor sets with all-metal regulators and an all-metal mainstock) I suppose you mean it's made of some sort of wood, with both nickel and brass mounts. I don't think I've seen a set that mixed the two metals. Why would a maker mix nickel mounts and brass mounts on the same set? Does it look nice that way?
I suspect Seth charges what he thinks he could sell for today... If you put up with the 4-year waiting list, you are effectively buying a lock on the price. In 4 years, they might be selling for 10,000USD (because he had two more years of practice at pipe-making), and your investment might be worth your waiting time.
If that's the case, then Seth probably thinks his pipes are worth 7K right now, and that would be a reasonable starting point for a price to sell them. (Keep in mind, most instrument makers don't actually collect--aside from a deposit--until the product is delivered).
But you cant get his pipes now. The waiting list means, presumably that the pipes delivered now where commisioned a couple of years ago.
If this is the case then perhaps he values sets delivered in 4 years at 7000$. So I wonder what price he sold pipes at years ago now being delivered.
The fact if the matter is that it is the people buying who dictate what they are worth. If he upp'd his price to 8,000 or.... and they still sold, thats what they are worth.
If yer man here sells his pipes at 10,000 now, then to someone they were worth 10,000$ . You can see that someone with the money could easily consider immediate delivery as worth the extra money.
The top price has not yet been found,[ I imagine, or perhaps seth has tried asking more and been rebuffed?] and will presumably fluctuate.
Perhaps in fact you can bid with the maker, the more money you offer the quicker you get the pipes? Hmm..............
If he is a top pipes maker and this is a good set my estimate is they are worth his delivery price now plus about 10% for every year of his waiting list.
