Manfid looked for Csharp/D tunes for novices; anyone any suggestions for B/C? I personally find tunes in G easier, maybe because there is less across-row playing.
These tunes can be played with a lot of consecutive draw notes which may make them seem easy to novices:
The Trip to Athlone (Jig in D)
The Old Favourite (Slide in G)
Dingle Regatta (G)
Tell My Ma (Polka in G)
Humours of Tulla (Reel in D)
Merry Blacksmith (Reel in D)
Kitty in the Lane (Reel in D)
If you want more of a challenge and good arpeggio exercise, try
Father O'Flynn (jig in D)
Harvest Home (Hornpipe in D)
Humours of Tulla is a great suggestion from MYBC but make sure you do learn tunes in D which bounce around the rows a lot especially D F# A runs because your going to have to be able to play them well to play the BC box. I was taught a set
I'm not long playing the box and have been able to pick out the following tunes without too much bother:
Roddy McCorley (March in G)
Donnybrook Boy (Jig in C)
Over the Oceans (Jig in G)
Kerry Polka (in G)
A useful source of information about the B/C Box and tunes is 'The Box' by David C. Hanrahan (Ossian Press).
I'd also recommend getting along to a beginners session in your town/city if one exists. I've found this to be very beneficial as I've met other box players and got hold of some nice tunes too.
from my "fast tunes with a really difficult bit on B/C" selection to pass away those idle Christmas moments:
Humours of Glendart (probably the worst tune to play on B/C)
Teetotaller's Reel (hard in G - try it in F for respite)
The Wise Maid or All Around the World (Reel in D)
B/C tunes for novices

They're not easy, but for someone just starting out, if you get them up to speed you'll be set for just about anything else.

Re: B/C tunes for novices
a couple of the tunes i find torture on b/c box and therefore force myself to practice at least from time to time:
a. necessity of rapid switches between d or d7 arpeggios & g or other arpeggios:
music in the glen
hunter's house
b. necessity of using those low notes:
jug of punch (A part)
tam lyn

Re: B/C tunes for novices
Green Fields of America seems to trip off very nicely on the b/c box, especially when you get the hang of G rolls.

I forced myself to practice that one too, but I thought it ended up being quite straightforward on the box.
The Fisherman's Lilt was my favorite box tune. Other ones that were a lot of fun:
The Old Bush
Gravel Walks
The Laurel Tree is pretty easy...
Those Am hornpipes from Kevin Burke
Caisleann na nOr & Bobby Casey's
