Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Hi Everybody, I've been reading this forum for a while but this is my first posting so, Hi, hope you're all well.

I've been backing tunes for quite a while now and have finally had to admit that it may be quite good fun to play a tune every now and then. So I bought a whistle and I was right, it is fun, I'm really enjoying it.

Now, in various sessions over the years I have heard melody players say, 'that's a flute/fiddle/pipe tune, it falls under your fingers.'

So D whistle players, could you suggest any tunes that just fall under your fingers?

Cheers

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Brosna
Saddle the Pony
The Temperance Jig
The Seven Stars
St Patrick's Day March

The first tune I learned was Planxty Hewlett. It took a while to get it to flow, although it's not a difficult tune. Maybe a certain level of expertise is needed before anything "falls under your fingers".

Enjoy your whistle!

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

A few personal favourites, all in D Major:

Easy and delightful slow tunes:
Blind Mary, Down By The Sally Gardens;

Jig:
The Lark In The Morning;

Slip Jig:
The Foxhunters';

Reels:
The Bucks Of Oranmore, The Mountain Road, The Wind That Shakes The Barley;

Hornpipes: The Boys Of Blue Hill, The Belfast (Sweep's);

Others: Si Bheag Si Mhor, Lord Inchiquin, Da Slockit Light.

The last of these contains a g# but being quite a slow tune is a good one on which to practise playing, or getting round, this note.

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Tom Ward's Downfall, The Boys of Coomanore, Grogan's Jig, Shamrock Hill, Calliope House, Con Cassidy's (as played by Altan), Wedding Reel (how LĂșnasa calls it) are tunes that fall under my fingers easily. The Gravel Walk is one of those I don't like to play on the flute since they somehow don't fit my fingers or something like that. Other people like it on the flute. I guess it's just me...

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

The Blackthorn Stick is a jig that falls nicely under the ol' fingers, as I sit here and watch another six inches of snow come down...(sigh)

Any favourite sets?

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Don't forget songs that are also tunes, they can be easier to get started on. I like this set, with two song/tunes up front:

Limerick Rake / Lanagan's Ball / Leitrim Fancy

If I can play them on whistle, anybody can.

Re: Tunes that fall under your fingers.

Stick your Boys to Bluehill with Off to California, it should be called the beginner whistler's hornpipe set.
