Bass End

Bass End

Hey all...

I've been playing box for about two and a half to three years, and I'm thinking that I'll soon want to start using the bass end. The only instruction I've ever received is from two weeks at Augusta (with the McComiskeys and Martin Quinn) and the John Williams DVD. Brilliant players, all of them-but none really went into depth with how to use the basses.

So, does anyone have any advice on how to implement them? Practice exercises? Do you learn the basses when you learn the tune or separately? Where should I start?

(Oh, by the way, the bass style I'm after is the really rhythmic, pumping old-school style, if that gives help or direction).

Re: Bass End

Do a search of past dicussions for this one, Z.

One of the problems is that there is no standard for the chrods and basses. Your first problem is to find out how yours are set, then decide if that's what you want.

I keep meaning to get my box retuned to the Kevin Burke setup, but it means losing the box for a few weeks which is just too much of a wrench for me. The setup I currently have doesn't suit ITM all that well.

John Williams does the best left hand work to my mind - the version of Saddle The Pony on that tutorial DVD, where he makes the box sound like the regulators on a set of Uillean Pipes, is the one I want to emulate. One of these days....

If you can't find the info you're after drop me a line - I have maps for most of the standard makes of box somewhere amongst my many digital resources.
