Re: were can i get a mandolin

An Ozark isn't a bad instrument for even a good player, providing it's the Korean-made one and not the Eastern European Ozarks. If it's got the wooden pickguard inlayed into the soundboard it's the European one.
One easy ( easy ! ) modification to improve the sound of a mandolin is to fit a Red-Henry-pattern bridge, instead of whatever is currently on there - it's basically a two-footed design, made of one piece of ( ideally ) maple, with various holes cut in it, which both lightens the bridge and channels the vibrations through from strings to soundboard in a more efficient manner then either the wedge-section solid bridges normally fitted to flat-top mandolins, or the adjustable bridges fitted to american-pattern f-hole mandolins. Red Henry was offering them for sale for about $10, even getting one from the States wouldn't be expensive, but if you find his website ( he's also on the CoMando forum ) you can find out how to make one for yourself, if you're at all handy.

Re: were can i get a mandolin

I have had a Romanian flat back, probably now owned by Ozark, for about 21 years, having swapped a Suzuki pear shaped mandolin for it. It is perfect for sessions as it has plenty of volume. It always looks bigger than the current East European Ozark.

Matchett's in Belfast, the small shop closest to the City Hall, has some decent mandolins.

Re: were can i get a mandolin

the eastman mandolins have a good rep, marus music in belfast have some. for 450 you could get a jimmy moon ( i have one), great volume and you'ld probably never need another.

Re: were can i get a mandolin

Or try a Fylde Touchstone if you want wider string spacing (and slightly longer scale length).

Re: were can i get a mandolin

I checked last night after my previous entry - $20 for a Red Henry bridge, a bargain if you can't make one for yourself.
