Hi all
Just got this announcement and I'm passing it on to you all because James is not only an incredible fiddler but also an excellent teacher. I think it was mentioned earlier this year, but it's worth a repeat:
A Note from James Kelly
I am now offering Irish music students the opportunity to take lessons from me via the internet. These are real time lessons that allow us to exchange musical information and ideas via the web. The beauty of these lessons is the fact that we can see and hear each other, in person, and the feedback is instantaneous. The technical set up is straight forward, and the audio and video feed via the internet has been very good.
I am offering these lessons primarily to fiddlers; however, on occasion, non fiddlers have requested some general musical feedback on their playing, and Ive always been happy to accommodate their requests for lessons.
If you would like more information about taking an internet lesson with me, please write to me at jameskellymusic@yahoo.com and I will send you all the details.
Thank you.

Re: Fiddle lessons with James Kelly via the internet
Sounds like a really good idea, especially for the far flung. I'm not a fiddle player but there's no doubt about the calibre of the man. James is at the front in this old video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga4qocQkH0A
Re: Fiddle lessons with James Kelly via the internet
James is an excellent set of eyes and ears and has a great knack for recommending changes in your fundamentals as a way of helping cultivate the finer points of your playing.
I had the pleasure of enduring a week-long boot camp with him a couple years ago and the impact on my fiddle playing and music learning continues even now.
I would not recommend it if you are looking for somebody to tell you how great you are. If you are looking for a critical and honest appraisal of what you are doing (particularly with respect to your body mechanics), and you would like serious, practical recommendations on how to make the changes you desire, he's absolutely your best bet.
Re: Fiddle lessons with James Kelly via the internet
I had the pleasure of a workshop with him one afternoon, after which I got another hour's worth of one-on-one - and I got the whole lesson on his fiddle. All I can remember?

You're right Curamach, James is at the back. It's been a long time since I saw the 2 Johns in action at the 4 Seasons in Capel St in the early 80s. Great clip though , eh?

Well considering they're playing cheerful tunes in the above video, don't they all look miserable!

James is in the back, the two Johns in the front.
James is an excellent teacher. I had a week with him in Augusta.

It was James who clued me in on Sliebh Luachra bowing technique, and I've been enjoying the change in lifestyle ever since.
