the best thing about the session

the best thing about the session

You know, the best thing about the session is accidentally wandering upon a tune that you know very well by ear but never learnt to play. I just played a reel that I'e probably heard a thousand times but never tried to play it - I just happened to have a go at it from this site. Nice that.

Re: the best thing about the session

I'd say the best thing is the colour

Re: the best thing about the session

I don't understand, please talk me through the scenario:

You have heard a tune a thousand times and yet you have never tried to play it? Then what? You happened to have a go at it from this site? I don't understand. I don't know what you are on about. Do you mean you had a go at it from the abc?

Honestly, I'm not being facetious or in any way sarcastic or anything, It's just that I'm aghast.

Re: the best thing about the session

I'd say the best thing is the camaraderie and generosity of spirit which ensures the page doesn't turn into a punch up (at least, not every day it doesn't, which is quite remarkable really, given the mix of rough characters, of poetic troubadours, of temperamental strolling players, of opinionated ramblers, who mingle here...supervised only by one lone Jeremy, perched high up there in the watch tower...)

Let's not forget the rough troubadours, poetic ramblers, temperamental characters and opinionated strolling players? :-/

Re: the best thing about the session

The best thing for me is being part of the sound we put out. I just like being a part of the music.

Re: the best thing about the session

The best thing about The Session (at least that what I thought we were talking about..) is when Michael or Dow comes on and they say out loud (or at least in their posts) to someone's face, what quite a lot of people were already thinking, but were too polite...nay, diffident, to mention.
Makes me larff that does.

Re: the best thing about the session

I agree with Mehi. Though I sometimes think that Jeremy should turn the site blue for a day, just to see the reaction...

Re: the best thing about the session

AAhh this has been well and truely hijacked!!
But the reason I think the session is great, is that you never know where it will take you !
Which I think was youre point to begin with Richrua?

I know the 'e' should not be there. Thankyou before you tell me.

Re: the best thing about the session

Yeah, what I meant was - we all have so many tunes in our heads that we have heard so many times, but for whatever reason have never tried to learn all of them. (For example - you could listen to a cd for many years without actually trying to learn all of the tunes). These tunes just float about in your head until the day that you happen to have a go at playing them. The other day I was browsing here and had a go at a reel from the abc s - and low and behold I had it quickly simply because the tune was in my head already from god only knows when.

I just like the way that happens, that's all!

Re: the best thing about the session

The tunes? the craic? the dancin? The whole social aspects ? ahh, too many things to mention.
Oh, you mean this session.!....... meeting people[ in a way], the craic, humour, helping people out, usefull advice, the ebb and flow of a good discussion, a good scrap, the humour!

Re: the best thing about the session

Yes Richrua I know exactly what you mean. In a strange way I have had a similar experience over the last few months. I have managed to play tunes I didn't immediately recognise and only afterwards discovered they were tunes I knew very well but played in a different key.
Is this a similar thing? Tunes heard but never played and tunes played often , played differently?

Re: the best thing about the session

The advice given freely, the warmness of some of ya all, the smiles I get reading some of the craic. Its like no other site..yet for a world wide site, it has a common aim for us all. We love it really.

Re: the best thing about the session

Has to be one of the best sites on the web. It's like being at a session with half the world. You can bounce ideas off people from Perth to Boston and all places in between, get the name of any unknown tune literally in minutes, flag up sessions and concerts, re-discover that tune you heard ages ago but forgot (like richrua) and perhaps, best of all, enjoy a bit of craic now and again.

Re: the best thing about the session

The best thing is when someone unexpected turns up and kicks some life into a routine performance.
Much like a real session.
